waves win in 4. LB takes first set 25-23, with Waves giving 7 service errors. next three sets too much fire power and blocking from the Waves and they get their serves in better. Kalmbach with monster 24 kills, and two other Waves in double figure kills. Yould was one of the only bright spots for the Niners. undersized, but quick jumper and arm for a middle. Just not enough pin pressure tonight.

It wasn't just service errors in that first set, as Pepperdine just didn't look ready to play. They let a free ball drop untouched and their timing looked off for most of that game before they finally got a run going to make it close. In the second set, you could tell Pepperdine was winning, but it didn't seem like anything special. They just found their rhythm and Beach was done. I think it was 25-13 and although it was tied at 1-1, the match was over. I was hoping the officials would recognize this and decide to make it like juniors matches and make the third game to 15, with winner take all. But there was no mercy rule and they had to play it out.
Amongst the entertaining features were: (1) Andy Reed apparently has forgotten how to fill out a lineup card and Knipe couldn't be bothered with it. They had two extended game stoppages trying to decipher Reed's handwriting. (2) There was a rookie linesman who was just horrid. The poor calls balanced out, but man did he look lost at times. He had no idea where to lineup during timeouts. (3) Pepperdine had 12/18 suited players with their hand over their heart during the national anthem while Long Beach was only 2 out 17. Pepperdine was the more disciplined and coachable team on the court, which was predictable from the national anthem. (4) Long Beach State misses Crabb, but they may miss Sato even more. Their libero looked shell shocked and I'm pretty sure he developed a nervous tick over the course of the match. (5) Ethnic diversity has not made it to Pepperdine. (6) A good idea to reduce abuse on the net (lots of net calls it seemed) would be to run a live current through it. (7) Matt West has an uncanny ability to deliver precise sets from anywhere. Matt Tarantino does not. (8) Big screen video presentations during the lineup announcement should be left to the NBA. It felt like an awkward silence in a conversation. (9) Everytime Kalmbalch did one of his silly macho man body slam pushes (rather than a standard high five), I had to wonder if that's the root of Matt West's back injuries over the years. (10) Watching two laid-back veteran coaches like Knipe and Dunphy at work was great to observe. No one loses their cool and they make smart moves at the right time.

(5) Ethnic diversity has not made it to Pepperdine.
I beg to differ. I counted at least 5 blondes, four black haired, and 9 brown haired players.
