Hi everyone! I have been offline for awhile and wanted to know if there have been any new developments in Purdue volleyball. Volleyball season is still a long ways away, but I cannot wait for it to begin again

Hi everyone! I have been offline for awhile and wanted to know if there have been any new developments in Purdue volleyball. Volleyball season is still a long ways away, but I cannot wait for it to begin again All I know is that Alexa Smith is going to carry this team. She is a great player and Purdue is very lucky to have her.

As part of the Block Party, I have heard big things about Alexa Smith, but I really doubt a 6'1 freshman is going to carry any team in the B1G unless her name was Carlini. Purdue returns all outside hitters from last year. I hope Smith is that good, but I have learned until the HS / club player steps onto the college floor, it is difficult to determine how effective she might be.

She reminds me of a more polished, less powerful Ariel Turner. She definitely has the potential to carry the team, and I cannot wait to watch the boilermakers next year! They are going to be a FUN team to watch in the years to come!

The outsides this year were not that great they were not consistent at all. Another problem for Purdue is setting, I do not see that improving after Val leaves.

I always love it when a player red-shirts, then they have 4 productive years without those "freshman jitters", it seems to me. However, Alexa Smith has played enough USA Team volleyball against stiff competition, that she should be able to cope, as a freshman.
I see this year's freshman improving as Sophomores.
Annie Drews had a break-out year, she needs to continue at that pace. She has gotten better every year.
Val Nichol got better every year, at setting, so I agree, the setting is not going to be as silky smooth as when Val set. That is why you love having Seniors.
The big battle is going to be for the Middle spots...

Alexa Smith absolutely has the skills and IQ to carry Purdue and in my opinion will be a starting 6 rotation player from day one. She may not have the college experience yet, but make no mistake, she has a lot of experience at a very high level.

Can anybody share why the believe Smith has demonstrated she can "carry" Purdue. Is this based on watching club play, evaluating stats from USA JNT, high school dominance?

I don't think Smith will need to "carry" Purdue in order for them to be successful. They've got a lot of weapons; they just need to play consistently and limit their errors.

I like hearing all of the positive things about Alexa Smith. From the headlines I read on the web, it seems like she will be a joy to watch for 4 years. But what about the other incoming freshman? I am hoping that Cuttino's sister will be bringing the same work ethic that Danielle did freshman year. She didn't get the starting job right away, but kept on getting better and better as the season progressed and earned her spot. I agree with the setting comments. For the official Spring roster, they have Ashley Evans listed as a setter and Lydia Dimke as a setter/outside hitter. Does that usually mean anything? Will the coaches try to do a 6-2 offense again? I'm not positive, but wasn't Evans recruited by Purdue to be a setter? I am sure that Coach Shondell will be training the person who will be a setter very hard this spring/summer. Val Nichol was an exceptional player and cannot be easily replaced. What does everyone think about the Libero spot? Will Neill continue to have the job? Is there anyone that is able to compete with her for that position? Thanks for all the insight so far

Report on negotiations to cover an expected million dollar cost for COA at Purdue: on.jconline.com/1FIZysR"The athletic department will now pay $1.5 million to the university for internal services compared to nearly $3.5 million during the last fiscal year." That money is earmarked to pay for - $1,000,000 for COA + Reducing ticket prices, especially for students with the "all access" card going from $250 to $99, renaming it a "boarding pass" instead of a "VIP pass". to start.

I don't have access to richkern.com and I couldn't find too much information on Lexi Dorn. Is she being recruited by any other school? From the articles you shared, it seems like she will compliment the other players on the team very well.

The thing about Smith is that she's what the Boilers desperately need: a quality 6-rotation outside. The outsides the Boilers currently have need to up their game considerably.

I thought that Azariah Stahl could turn into a quality 6 rotation player. Last year, she was still getting used to the college game...but I thought that she kept a lot of plays alive with her digging and terminated well. I liked what I saw for a first year player. I am very excited to see Smith play
