The thing about Smith is that she's what the Boilers desperately need: a quality 6-rotation outside. The outsides the Boilers currently have need to up their game considerably. I thought that Azariah Stahl could turn into a quality 6 rotation player. Last year, she was still getting used to the college game...but I thought that she kept a lot of plays alive with her digging and terminated well. I liked what I saw for a first year player. I am very excited to see Smith play I thought while Stahl showed promise, it never happened last year. It was only her freshman year, but you want to see a more significant improvement, IMO.

I watched most Purdue matches at home last year. Azariah arrived with high expectations after impressive HS career. Sizzlincatfish was underwhelmed. How many OH in the Big Ten hit higher than .220? How many freshman OH surpassed .220? My guess is one - the league's FOY.

Seems to me this year the OH battle will mirror last year's MiH battle for playing time.
You have a Senior starter, a younger starter and a phenom freshman.

But, if you run a 6-2, do you only use one OH? That's what I think will happen...Evans and Dimke sharing the setting duties? It will be difficult for either of them to fill Nichol's shoes, but I think both of them could together.

Regarding next season - I'm looking forward to see what Shondell does with this team. IMO, while I loved Val's athleticism, her setting was a little inconsistent and her dumping choice was very suspect at times. I haven't really seen enough of Dimke or Evans' setting to really pass judgment, but I am confident that Shondell will do the best with what he has. The good news is that both setters are of decent size so if one of them steps up a 5-1 is not out of the question. It would be really interesting to see them both grow and set a 6-2 and have them both swing on the right side.
Regarding a previous post - it is true that the left sides struggled last season. Having a top recruit like Smith come in will definitely challenge the senior and sophomore and it will be interesting to see what happens. I hope Alexa comes in and quickly establishes herself as that 6-rotation outside. However, I am quite impressed with Stahl's athleticism - let's hope the off-season has been good to her.
Most of all - I am stoked to see the development of Cuttino - She will be a dominant force on this team and her ceiling is amazing. Does anyone have any information regarding her sister? I know she's a little shorter but in terms of athleticism, how does she compare?

What I'm more excited to watch is the coaching changes. Purdue for the last 5 years have always had the weapons but Dave made a point to say last year that if Annie Drews and Val Nichol are only making Honorable Mention All Northeast Region teams then they are doing something wrong.
I think setting will be fine between Ashley Evans and Lydia Dimke. I see Lydia really taking control of that position soon and she definitely has the talent to do so. And whether or not Alexa Smith "carries" the team, she will at least bring more fire and competition to the OH position. I personally think carrying the team means that shes the only weapon. Purdue must utilize the middles more and spread the floor for the pins because between Drews, Stahl, Epenesa, Evans(?), and Smith, they will get it done.
Lastly, blocking must get better. There were too many games the last couple years that they seemed to lose on blocking errors alone.

Saw a tweet that Shondell had Cuttino hitting on the left. Is that a possibility for next year?

I am very surprised about Ambrose leaving Purdue for FSU. Its an amazing program...but I thought that she would stay as a Boiler. I'm guessing that she must have been homesick? If she would have stayed, wouldn't she have had her fair share of playing time? I was really excited to see her play this coming season. She will be missed.

I've spoke with one of the players the other day. The have been working twice as hard due to not making the tourney. Peters will be a welcome back row addition. She is a beast that can get to any ball. The setters are solid. Lydia has fast solid hands and a year under her belt. Evans is solid. The power in Cuttino is proven. The senior leadership from Drews and Niel will be backed by high level of playing and quality play. The added freshman will only boost our level of play. I've seen little Cuttino play club. She is a bit behind big sis, but potential is there. I will be a season ticket holder again for sure

Dave Shondell did a video that said (to paraphrase) 5-6 would be gaining added experience by playing on all-star teams this Summer. Ashley Evans is going to China June 13-25 Azariah Stahl and Amanda Neill are on the Collegiate National Team June 21-29 in New Orleans One person will be on the B1G: Slovenia, Croatia and Italy tour scheduled for June 13- June 25 So, I am wondering what 1-2 people made what other team(s)? Can't wait to find out!
