With tryouts just around the corner, who are preseason favorites, and who are some possible underdogs who could compete.

Glenbard west is going to be very strong. Only lost one starter and have numerous kids from spvb 18 MIZUNO and runbird. New trier will also be solid.

It is hard for me to see any other team winning state than Glenbard West - assuming all of their players remain healthy and there are not any other unforeseen circumstances. All of the other 'top' teams that I have read thrown around seem to be distinctly below GBW as complete teams. Will be interesting to see how everything pans out!

An easy predictor of who will win state in Illinois: which club team is stronger, Ultimate 18 Gold or SPRI 18Mizuno and which high school team do most of those kids play for? Last Year it was Ultimate, hence Lincoln Way winning. This year it's SPRI, hence GBW being the favorite.

Alex Hurlburt how is Plainfield Central and the Plainfield area stacking up this season? Great area for growth in Illinois volleyball.
Agreed that GBW is a top team in the western suburbs. However, the Oswego Sectional is loaded with many teams that have a shot of getting to the State Finals.

Last Year it was Ultimate, hence Lincoln Way winning. This year it's SPRI, hence GBW being the favorite. Personally, I would rephrase this to say club program not a specific team from year to year. It always comes down to 2 club programs in the state of IL - Ultimate and Sports Performance. The high school teams that have the majority of their impact players attend these 2 clubs in the off-season seem to put themselves in a good position to make a state championship run. They don't have to always be on Ultimate Gold or 18 Mizuno. They could be on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th teams at 18s, 17s, or 16s. Of course, there are many other factors that go into winning the ultimate prize. But these 2 programs have a great history of producing quality and technically sound athletes. For example, these are the most recent state champions in IL in the past 10 years. In parenthesis, is the club program that the majority of the players attended. Maybe this changes this year.
2014 - LWE (Ultimate) 2013 - DGS (SPRI) 2012 - WWS (SPRI) 2011 - Sandburg (Ultimate) 2010 - Marist (Ultimate) 2009 - WWS (SPRI) 2008 - WWS (SPRI) 2007 - WWS (SPRI) 2006 - Maine South (?) 2005 - WWS (SPRI) 2004 - WWS (SPRI)

WWS should walk into the finals, I see new trier beating them in the championship though, barrington winning 3rd. It seems WWS is a little up and down, so if they play well anything can happen

Andrew (3rd seed) took WWS to 3 games before losing. WWS is still pretty sloppy. Sandburg looked very good. They're my new pick to win.

The Plainfield area/Southwest Prarie Conference is relatively weak, in my opinion. I expect that Plainfield Central and Plainfield North will be able to knock off some quality wins/upsets, but I don't expect them to make much of a splash when it comes to competing with the western suburbs.

volleyball, Excellent analysis. I completely agree with what you are suggesting. It sometimes erks me when I read the 'preseason rankings' and whatnot from reporters who are not actively involved in the club scene. If you have your finger correctly on the pulse of club competition, it seems natural to see which teams will be successful within the state tournament. Though I'd prefer that certain 'other' clubs eventually carry more weight within the state, it seems pretty clear how things have progressed recently. Well done.

WWS(SPRI) beat Sandburg(Ultimate) in the Semis in 3. It was close the whole way. New Trier(Vortex+Adversity) Beat Buffalo Grove in the other Semis.
New Trier Beat WWS in the finals. I think the scores were something like 25-17, 25-19, but the games weren't as close as the scores. Buffalo Grove beat Sanburg for 3rd.
Gold Results: 1. New Trier 2. WWSouth 3. Buffalo Grove 4. Sandburg 5. Brother Rice 6. Marist 7. Naperville Central 8. Lincolnway E. Silver Results: 9. Barrington 10. DeSmet 11.Neuqua 12. Naperville North 13.Lincolnway C. 14. Glenbrook North 15. LakePark 16. Andrew Bronze: 17. Moeller 18. Waubonsee 19.Metea Valley 20. Darby 21. Minooka 22. Downers Grove South 23. Roger Bacon 24. OPRF
