What does Duke need to do to keep up with North Carolina and Florida State in the upcoming season. What will they need to do to move past the 1st round in the NCAA's?

Duke is not that far behind, first off. They and UNC go back and forth constantly. UNC just happened to have a really good tournament.

Duke was very close with both FSU and UNC last year. They beat FSU in their only meeting and lost one of the matches with UNC in 5. Replacing Obeime will be one of the challenges along with getting more offense from the middle and right.

It's true that in the last decade they've been going back and fifth but UNC had three losses last year, all to top ten teams away from home. They were better than Duke definitively last year and things are trending in a direction that Nagel shouldn't be pleased about. While UNC has some great recruits in the pipeline, Duke seems to be faltering. This is Duke's last year with Sklar so they need to make something happen. I heard something about Deichmeister getting a fifth year, and if that's true it could happen but they don't have much setting talent if she has graduated. Middle should be fine but finding two solid pi hitters to complement Sklar and possibly take some of the passing stress off of her and Karelov will be crucial. Hopefully Bartholemew from A5 turns out to be a hidden gem because Kropf and Cadie Bates were not getting it done. A transfer would help. I expect Duke to be a tourney team again but I'm not sure Sklar can pull them up to a conference victory.

I thought she was more projected as a middle, but if she provide height and power at the pins that would be great for Duke.

A part of me wonders how good Duke could have been this past season if not for 3 factors: 1) Elizabeth Campbell transferring; 2) Awele Nwaeze de-committing last minute, and 3) Maggie Deichmeister not getting injured last off-season. Campbell and Nwaeze were impact players for their respective teams in the Big 10 (Ohio State and Indiana) this past season, and would have added much-needed firepower, physicality, and blocking for Duke. Coming in as the reigning ACC Setter of the Year, I thought Deichmeister was poised for a great senior season but her injury really set her back. With those 3, I think Duke could have been a very different team and won the ACC over UNC and FSU. Anyway, as trianglevolleyball said, Duke has not been able to keep up with UNC recently in terms of recruiting pipeline especially at outside hitter, which will be an issue if Duke still wants to be an ACC contender once Sklar graduates. With that said, I'm very excited about Leah Meyer coming in next year. I'm not sure where Nagel will choose to play her, but she can crush the ball from anywhere on the court although she may be most comfortable in the middle ( ). She, along with the return of a healthy Deichmeister, will help Duke replace the production of Obeime and Williams from last year.

I haven't followed Duke volleyball. It is nice to read how well Sklar has done. She played on the same club team as Brittany Howard. I would watch their team whenever they were playing in SoCal club tournaments. At the time I thought Sklar was every bit as good as Howard. Sklar never got nearly as much publicity as Howard, at least not out here on the west coast.

Players with great talent. Not even. They've got more than enough talent. They need better coaching. I disagree. They get about two top 100 recruits a year and never get top 25 recruits, which is fairly below par for a ranked school. Louisville, FSU and possibly UNC all out recruit Duke. Maybe Nagel could be a better recruiter but once she gets them in the gym she is doing the best with what she's got. Nobody on this team outside of Sklar and Karelov is elite caliber so I'm not sure where you think all this talent is.

Sklar was third team All-American her Sophmore year and conference POY and had better stats and more responsibility as a junior but fewer accolades due to the rise of FSU and UNC. I'd say she'd contend for a starting spot at the top 5 schools and definitely start anywhere else in the country. That club team must've done pretty well.

Her passing and presence on the right was missed. Nwaeze would've been nice but not necessarily a game changer.williams was just as good as Deichmeister was in 2013 and beat her out at the start of the year eventually winning POY. It's just a real bummer Campbell left because Duke would've been great wht seniors Sklar and Campbell this upcoming year.

Why did Campbell leave? She was from Raleigh area, and played club ball around that area. Committed to Duke early and then moved to Colorado for last year of HS. Also a degree from Duke is pretty nice.
