Interesting switch by BYU's Chris McGown. He's been voting Loyola #1 since the 2nd poll, but suddenly he's put UC Irvine at #1, Pepperdine at #2, and dropped Loyola to #3.
Irvine's David Kniffin is standing firm in keeping BYU #1. Joel Walton from Ball State is standing just as firm in keeping them at #7 after his team lost two tight 3-setters to them last week. I'm eager to see what his opinion will be after his team plays UC Irvine this week.
So now Loyola is only getting 16 1st-place votes. Ouch.

Prepare for the Butthurt loyola fans who will complain that the coaches hate their team because they haven't received all the first place votes. You know its coming

The real travesty is, that for the first time this season, a coach has had the temerity to place them #3--not even #2, but all the way down to #3. I'm not even sure how Loyola is managing to hang onto the #1 ranking with such disparity.

But before we jump back on topic, who said that coaches hate Loyola? Okay, so eventually the cream of the crop of the MPSF would start to distinguish themselves. Loyola has had a relatively easy schedule. So has Lewis for that matter. We mostly know that these teams have positioned themselves at 1 and 2 based on preseason rankings and what they did the first week of the season. So I'm not surprised that both teams are losing a few points this week. The MPSF is having some good battles. Loyola and Lewis have their first matchup in a week. It will be the first really tough conference test for either team. I still think this Loyola team is a notch behind last year's team at this point. Lewis looks a notch better than last year, in my opinion.

This year has certainly been fun to watch. Do any of you think we could see a conference Carolina school in the final 4? I haven't been impressed with Penn State or Harvard so I'm also not sure what will happen in the EIVA. Could the play in game be between the EIVA and Carolinas winner?

I'd say there's about a .0000000001% chance of that happening... 1 and 2 get a buy, 3 plays 6, 4 plays 5... that means either somehow EIVA jumps up to the number 3 seed in the final 6 (not snowballs chance in hell, lezbehonest) or the #2 MIVA or #2/3MPSF school is seeded below a CC team (also, no possible way... literally, I looked it up on Nostradamus.com). Poop in one hand, wish in the other... see which one fills up faster.

Rankings are always interesting, but I'm looking forward to this week's matches (and Loyola/Lewis next week). There's some good ones. Any thoughts/analysis/predictions/insights on the following matches?
Tuesday, Mar 3 UC Irvine @ USC Cal State Northridge @ UCLA
Wednesday, Mar 4 Long Beach State @ UC Santa Barbara
Friday, Mar 6 Pepperdine @ Hawai'i Cal State Northridge @ UC Santa Barbara Long Beach St. @ UCLA BYU @ Stanford Ball State @ UC Irvine
Saturday, Mar 7 BYU @ Stanford Ohio St. @ George Mason Ball St. @ UC San Diego
Sunday, Mar 8 Pepperdine @ Hawai'i

Irvine got a huge win last night at USC. I think Santa Barbara, Irvine, and UCLA both take 2, the Beach and CSUN go 0-2, Pepperdine gets a split at Hawaii, Ball State wins at UCSD to split, BYU sweeps Stanford in Palo Alto, and Ohio State edges Mason in 5.

Pepp/Hawaii are the biggest matches of the week. One or both of those teams will have to add a loss to their record. It's hard to travel and play at Stan Sherrif arena with their huge fan support. If Pepp adds two loses then the race becomes more tight between BYU, Hawaii and Irvine. I doubt BYU will lose a match to Stanford although I think BYU is ranked higher than the level at which they are playing. BYU has back to back weekends against Pepp and then when UCI travels to BYU. Anybody agree that the two year home winning streak at BYU is about to end?

Anybody agree that the two year home winning streak at BYU is about to end? I never expected it to last through the season when I saw that UCI and Hawai'i were the last two home opponents. I don't see how they can possibly do better than splitting with both of them, unless they play much better than they are right now, and I have no idea if they have it in them. I said they were a mystery to me at the beginning of the season, and I still feel that way. I could see one or even both of these teams sweeping them at home.

Don't see how the streak will stay alive after those weekends. Honestly, crazy props to McGown if he wins 3 of 4 IMO...

It's crazy that we are more than halfway through the season and Loyola and Lewis have yet to play even though they are in the same conference. It's feels as if I've been waiting a long, long time for this matchup. I sure hope it doesn't disappoint.
