And were the "Good Ole Days" I never saw. I can feel the pain form the concrete already.

Diving on a concrete court -- it can be done, but understand you need special padding.

Nine Men Volleyball in the East Coast. It makes sense ... higher population density on the East Coast

As well as in other countries. I know people who learned how to dive on concrete floors when they were playing in Latin America, the gymnasiums were mostly large multi-purpose monstrosities built by large government entities with funding from the US or the former USSR as political chips, so they didn't really go for functional, just monolithic looking.

And I guess to be fair there are different types of concrete floors. Some of the ones I see today with the special coatings are diveable without much concern to abrading the skin. Those pitted concrete floors are hell though.

When I was in the 7th grade (in the late 1970s) in a Catholic school, my teacher would walk us to a local park for recess. The guys would split up into two teams and play football. The girls (plus two boys we suspected were gay) would get in several small circles of 5 or 6 and bump a volleyball around. I never understood the appeal of volleyball. It seemed so stationary versus the dynamic movements of football. But we were boys and we were too stupid to comprehend the subtle movements of volleyball. We could only understand BIG unambiguous movements that were clearly in front of our eyes. Girls handled ambiguity better.

When I was much younger we used to play tackle football on the blacktop playground at school. Not saying I would recommend it and not saying it was intelligent just saying that it can be done

I remember the men's olympic teams. Owning Quicksilver, Redsand, maybe Clubsport? gear. A Pass, Set, Crush book with sketches.
Playing against the Bangers at about 9 PM at the MIT tournaments.
Hoping beach would be on tv on the weekends...Smith/Stoklos...Hov ripping his shirt...4 man tour...Karch and Kent getting going...

80's were my childbirthing years, so it's kind of a fog. My first experience with volleyball, however, was in high school, on concrete, with those poles on tires, in the Arizona heat. Not a pleasant experience. Amazed I ever tried it again.

Amateurs.
Who can ever forget Zach and Monroe tearing it up on the sand in style. It was the perfect end to the 80's

I was (in the LATE 80s) finishing up a three year hs career, making 1st team all district / region my SR year. I was being recruited by UH; I was enjoying--if only through the vicarious experience--UH's reign at being number ones nationally in WVB and MVB; I was then choosing to follow family into the PNW--where they didn't *and still don't* have men's volleyball. Seattle was and still is cool though.
