Honestly, BYU needs to keep a solid lineup in for an ENTIRE match. They keep switching every positions (except libero) and its gonna kill them in the future. my preference would be: OH: Jake Langlois, Brenden Sander S: Robbie Sutton Opp: Matt Underwood Lib: Jaylen Reyes MB: Joe Grosh, Price Jarman
Switching players is gonna hurt!!

They are switching like crazy. Either Chris is a genius or he burns for it. But so far, they're atop the MPSF and they're building depth with every single match. I expect BYU to lose a couple more at least w/ Pepp, UCI and Hawaii still on the docket.
What may do them in ultimately is the fact they don't have a super star at any position. Rivera is even 50/50 w/ his injury. The fact they're where they're at today, given the new faces and injuries, is amazing to me honestly...

Yes, but it will hurt in the long run

I think the "it" that will hurt them in the long run is the lack of a super star, not so much that they're mixing up their roster... Though those could be the same issue...

I don't think that's a problem though as long as someone steps up. A star player didn't win BYU a national championship the past four years. Looking back, last year's Loyola didn't have a star. Caldwell stepped up during the tournament even though Jaeschke was the guy all year. In 2013 I believe Connor Hughes was tournament MVP even though Kevin Tillie led all season, and the 2012 UCI didn't have a star either. In fact, I can't think of a team in recent history that has won recently based on a star player. UCSB in 2011 was close (Menzel) but lost to OSU, USC lost in 2012 (Ciarelli), Byu lost in 2013 with Taylor and Ben. I think at the highest level it's all about whose hot. Anyone really can beat anyone on any given night

Playing weaker teams the musical chairs doesn't matter.

To be specific I meant leadership, which is usually synonymous w/ a super star. But yea, I don't see a guy that the team can look to. I think that'll hurt them...

After watching that 2nd match against Ball State, I think they should just start Sutton and stick with him. His placement has been better all season, and he ends up replacing Heap anyway at some point in the match. Neither is doing a good job of setting to their middles right now. Their middles are almost constantly having to adjust to sets that are too low, too high, too in front, too behind etc. Sutton does seem to be setting a better bic these days, at least to Sander. Offensively, they just seem to take a long time to get going. I don't know if the revolving door has anything do with that or not. Maybe they are just suffering from the mid-season blues. I do think ocmyhome's comments have a lot of merit. The lack of a leader standout makes for a very weird vibe on this team. You never know who will be a spark and who won't. Everyone seems to be in charge and yet no one. If Jake Langlois is on, he seems to fill this void somewhat, but he's not been sharp the last few weeks, and so far no one has picked up the slack.

Anyone know when/if Dobbert will be back? It seems like that could be a good boost if he comes back healthy.

McGown has my vote for Coach of the Year right now, because there is no way this team should be as good as it is.
There's one of two things going on in Provo: Either BYU is superbly deep, or McGown has no clue who his best 7 are. They did some of this last year, with Devin Young as the MB1, and Grosh/Hatch fighting for MB2. They played a variety of opposites, and Heap/Sutton battled for the setting spot with Heap being ahead more often that not. What saved them last year was consistency at OH with Taylor Sander and Rivera playing almost all the time, and Sander being so dominant.
All I know for sure at the moment is Reyes will be the libero. Everything else is up in the air. I want to see Langlois succeed because it's a great story, and having a huge OH like him is great for the national team down the road. But I'm mystified why people don't serve him every time baased on his inexperience. I think that might be why Fuchs got a look at OPP last weekend...so they can keep Langlois on the floor for hitting (much like UCLA did with Page last year) if necessary. He's like watching Bambi when he plays defense as he is super raw, but makes plays with his length and athleticism.
The next two weekends will be interesting....on the road against a Stanford team that is doing exactly what BYU is doing with far less success, then a bye before going out to Pepperdine. They need to figure out who will be on the floor that weekend for a huge series.
vballfordayzz is pretty close to what I would do. I like Hatch over Jarman, but any combination of those middles would work for me.

Favorable scheduling. BYU is not that good. Rivera, even last year prior to getting injured, was wildly inconsistent.

the main thing I'd change is to have Dobbert at OPP. He's just better than Underwood. The only reason he hasn't been in the line is because he's been injured.
And I don't think it really matters completely at this point of the season if they have a rotating line-up. I think it only helps them later in the season. More players will have experience and be able to step in when called on.
BYU has more depth than any team in the league right now and part of that is because of the line-up changes.
What's going to be weird is next year when Ben Patch comes back and what do they do with their line-up then?

You set Patch 60% of the balls and let him carry your team. He was fantastic as a freshman, and seeing as he's back from his mission already, he'll get a full summer with USA Volleyball to get back into shape. With him out there, Sander and Langlois will both improve and the middles should get a few more open looks.
As for the rest, I think Dobbert goes back to Germany and goes pro, Underwood becomes a serving sub or maybe spends the offseason transitioning to OH, and Heninger fills the same role he has this season.

I actually doubt Langouis will play against Northridge. I saw a match a little while ago and CSUN had this little lefty serving specialist with the dirtiest float I have seen in a long time, you really need a VB IQ to even handle that serve.
