If your Beach knowledgeable, help me understand. I'm a player, we win the Big West Conference by going undefeated 16-0, and get to the second round of the NCAA tourney and a shot at a cross town rival UCLA. You're ranked inside the top 20 nationally for the first time in a while, so it feels like my squad has finally got this program with a great tradition back on track. As a player, that gets me super excited for next season to see how much further this team can go. Right? ....wrong.
Alex Reid, rising senior transfers to Colorado State; Joy Miley, sophomore transfers to Marquette. Both outside hitters, both to play in leagues that are weaker than the the Big West (although CSU the exception).
Now I understand Reid is from Colorado, but don't you get homesick when your a freshman and you're not getting along with your dorm roomate?
The point here is not to criticize a transferring player's decision to make themself happy, but set up my questions:
--do these transfers seem even a little odd after winning a league championship?
--could they have been "counseled out" due to incoming talent? (Although Reid was a starter)
--does this happen often at LBSU where a starter takes off in her senior year?
I really enjoyed watching this team play last year and was looking forward to this season. But now with the graduation of Mackie, and these transfers, where is this team headed in 2015?

I believe setter Erin Juley, who transferred before her RS JR year, has said that it was clear to her after conversations with the LB coaching staff that if she wanted to continue her career, it would need to be elsewhere. She came to Wisconsin for this past year. Note: she's had some lingering knee issues and did announce her retirement for medical reasons a few weeks ago. So it's possible that the coaching staff at LBSU saw the writing on the wall w/r/t her health and were trying to guide her in a direction they thought was in her best interest. They had new talent coming in at setter. But she clearly felt she had more to give.

I think part of the reason LB coaching staffs were pretty confident that Juley will not have much playing time was because they thought they have the top incoming setter and no 6 ranked recruit Kelly Claes. Claes later changed her commitment to USC sand vb

Its always unfortunate to see good players leave the program; however, I don't believe that this is a reflection of the coaching, or a decline, in the LBSU volleyball program. Although the team achieved great success in 2014, several players left the team for personal, academic, and career reasons. Alex Reid transferred to Colorado State for personal reasons involving her family. Joy Miley, as explained in previous posts, transferred to Marquette to pursue a degree not offered by Long Beach State. And finally, Sophie Bukovec, the 2014 Under 21 World Beach Volleyball champion representing team Canada, transferred to USC to play Sand Volleyball only for an institution that fully funds a top level program--Bukovec has effectively given up her indoor volleyball eligibility. Even with all of the change, BG has a solid nucleus of outstanding returnees, and incoming recruits, to defend their 2014 Big West Conference title. Hopefully with the addition of a few last minute incoming transfers, and a little luck, the Beach will be a favorite to defend its title this fall.

Hawaii returns an entire starting lineup besides libero and middle that took LBSU to five. I believe lbsu loses five starters. Hawaii upgrades at middle with Mitchem and stays the same at libero with kahakai. Lbsu will be top3 but that's behind ucsb and hawaii imo.

Setter Jenelle Hudson--2014 BWC POY--returns for her senior season this fall; however, All Big West First Team libero--Tyler Jackson--graduates this year. Long Beach returns BWC Freshman of the Year MB Ashley Murray and OH Anete Brinke. Lindsey Lawmaster, DS and serving specialist, also returns to anchor the back row. It will be interesting to see where BG places 6'5 Sherridan Atkinson. Although she played RS at nearby Millikan HS, and was a 2014 Senior Ace, I could see Atkinson starting along side Murray in the middle. 6'2 setter, and 2014 Senior Ace, Missy Owens could possibly see time on the outside. Also, Sara Watanabe is another back row specialist and could see significant playing time. The only other returning player, and whom may be a big question mark, is 6'4 MB Tiara Wallace. Although she has seen some playing time since 2012, Wallace may not be considered for a starting position. The Beach will bring in another outstanding recruiting class to compliment its #10 nationally ranked recruiting class in 2014. Four 2015 Senior Aces highlight the incoming class:
Peyton Grahovac 6'4 MB Megan Kruidhof 6'0 OH Sarah Miller 5'8 L/DS Mykah Wilson 5'11 L Zoyia Konstantopoulou 6'0 OH (Cypress Indoor/Beach National Teams) The above pretty much sums up the "expected" returnees, and newcomers, for LBSU in 2015. There is still room on the roster for a few transfers and I'm hoping the Beach can secure a few high impact players for the fall campaign.

ur A: talk Kehaulani into persuading 6.2 Sr. Emily Young for a graduate degree down the I-405. it would be just about the only way.
modify the 6-2. where Young sets & hits.
Atkinson / Hudson on the right. the foreigners on the OH positions. Lawmasters in the middle back. BW FOY @ MB#1 6.4 SR Wallace @ MB#2--who must be focused enough being a Harvard recruit. she was a Florida and Pepp recruit too.

Sounds like a plan! Although, BG has never been a big fan of the 6-2.

There is no way Wallace is going to be a starter as she is just too slow. My guess would be:
Setter: Hudson Right Side: Brinke Middles: Grahovac and Murray Left Side: Kruidhof and Atkinson Libero: Watanabe Defensive Specialists: Lawmaster and Miller
Would switch Brinke to left if either her or Kruidhof develop into a impact left. If that happens I would move Atkinson to the right.

That's a shame about Wallace. She's been a loyal team mate for 3 years; however, I agree she is pretty slow. It will be a VERY young team but they could gel by BWC time. I still believe BG is still working on a few transfers to bolster his 2015 roster.

Juley was limited by her injury and it impacted the whole team. They had a backup setter that they chose not to use, and I believe she is also gone now. Picking up Hudson is probably the best thing that has happened to Long Beach in a while. She is a rock solid setter and was a huge (maybe the biggest?) reason for their success last season.

because LB has Hudson, IMO the biggest hole for LB to fill is get athletic in the back-court. Losing Tyler Jackson & Cabrajac they lost a ton of athleticism & experience in the backrow to get the ball to Hudson - they'll be a solid blocking team, but they need quickness/experience in that back-row next year - Lawmaster is alright for a dS, but she's not athletic. LB could use a solid xfer OH and a solid xfer backrow player.
gonna also need a solid recruiting class with especially a setter coming in for competition at that spot for 2016.
