because LB has Hudson, IMO the biggest hole for LB to fill is get athletic in the back-court. Losing Tyler Jackson & Cabrajac they lost a ton of athleticism & experience in the backrow to get the ball to Hudson - they'll be a solid blocking team, but they need quickness/experience in that back-row next year - Lawmaster is alright for a dS, but she's not athletic. LB could use a solid xfer OH and a solid xfer backrow player. gonna also need a solid recruiting class with especially a setter coming in for competition at that spot for 2016. As far as back-row players go, Gimillaro has gnomes in his backyard that can dig and pass. Developing back-row players is one of his strengths, and not his biggest problem. Long Beach is seriously lacking firepower at the pins. That's by far their biggest deficit.

Da Beach has 2 schollies available.
Ciana Wagner?
Katia Sanchez (who’s now back in PR) ; Missy Owens @ OPP2
Alexis Cage??
I still can’t believe that Miley trx. He should have kept her at OPP2 (this last 2014). Too much pressure for being the next OH#1-Nichelle Burton went wasted. Poho!

Its always unfortunate to see good players leave the program; however, I don't believe that this is a reflection of the coaching, or a decline, in the LBSU volleyball program. Although the team achieved great success in 2014, several players left the team for personal, academic, and career reasons. Alex Reid transferred to Colorado State for personal reasons involving her family. Joy Miley, as explained in previous posts, transferred to Marquette to pursue a degree not offered by Long Beach State. And finally, Sophie Bukovec, the 2014 Under 21 World Beach Volleyball champion representing team Canada, transferred to USC to play Sand Volleyball only for an institution that fully funds a top level program--Bukovec has effectively given up her indoor volleyball eligibility. Even with all of the change, BG has a solid nucleus of outstanding returnees, and incoming recruits, to defend their 2014 Big West Conference title. Hopefully with the addition of a few last minute incoming transfers, and a little luck, the Beach will be a favorite to defend its title this fall. I think that your first assumptions are very incorrect. Joy left because of a combination of personal reasons and a desire to change majors. She had a great relationship with all of the coaches and everyone involved with the program knows that. I suspect she needed to get away from some situations at home that she could not escape if she remained living 15 miles from her parents. Alex just had a desire to move back home due to issues at home with a mother who has had issues living alone..that is all I will say about that...another great kid who got along well with everyone in the program from her teammates to the coaches. Sophie was a little on the sleazy side in that she came here really looking for an easy way out of having to play both indoor and outdoor VB...the coach at USC WHO EQUALS SOPHIES SLEAZE LEVEL, made a great pair to draw to.....Long Beach will be hurt by the departure of Alix but not the other two, especially Sophie, since she didn't play much this past year anyway, once the coaches figured out that her wandering eyes were in high gear!

Is it suddenly okay to describe female college players as "sleazy"? Or, to be more accurate, "Sophie was a little on the sleazy side", and "... who equals Sophies (sic) sleaze level".
My guess is that someone will claim that these were taken out of context, but nevertheless ...

Many other teams in the conference are returning a lot of key players. I don't think LBSU will be 3rd. Other than Hawaii returning everybody, UC Davis returns one of the best hitters in the conference Kaylin Squyres. Northridge will be without Hinger, Kaul, and Allen but returns two key players in Stinson and Boykin, and Diaz at middle. UCSB returns a lot of key players and so is Irvine.

Third does seem a bit ambitous unfortunately. You have the best setter in the conference in Hudson, but you lose your terminator Mackie, middle Okpala, top DS Cabrajac, and TJ first team all conference libero that's a lot of quality touches to replace I like the incoming freshman, including Kruidoff who I think eventually will be a better OH than Reid, but she's not Mackie, so seems they need a terminating OH to make the upper half.

Tyler Jackson will be missed the most, by far. So will Cabrajac. They will be extremely difficult to replace. The others not so much.

Don't count the Beach out. They return the conference POY and FOY plus Hall of Fame and COY Brian Gimmillaro. Despite the losses from graduation and transfers, the Beach will still contend for the title this fall.

With Hawaii reloading, the Wahine will be on top of the conference. UC Irvine, Northridge and UC Davis are returning some bombers. Hudson to me is overrated, but Ashley Murray is going to be a stud!!!!

I don't think Hudson is overrated, but I agree with most posters that Long Beach has lost a great deal of talent. Such is the price for having a stellar year with so many upperclassmen.

LBSU has too many questions on the left and in the back row/libero positions to be considered a real conference threat. Brian will have to have one of his best coaching years if the team is to be any higher than 3rd in the conference. Of course this could all change with a high impact left transfer but being this late in the game that will more than likely not happen.

Wonder when/if J.C. ever returns to SoCal. the ast. male 49er could conceivably go strictly sand. I'd think that Dillard is forever their Associate.
(His) Tx.'s J.C. and 6' SR OH, S.H., could be great additionally.

Long Beach St. has just added two experienced transfers and another freshman to beef up its 2015 roster:
Hayley Benson 6'4 MB SR Transfer Ball State University
Nele Barber 6'0 OH JR Transfer Marquette University
Carly Beddingfield 6'2 OH FR Albuquerque, NM
Does anyone have any information regarding the skill levels of these players?

Bensen had good stats for the year last season but it was mostly against a very easy schedule, she struggled against Wisconsin and didn't look very good. Barber hit below .200 last season. IMO decent picks ups but they won't make up for who they lost, or put Long Beach over the top against Hawaii.
