How was Dear Evan Hansen? did not like it at all.
probably my least favorite musical. Wow. You’re the first I’ve heard that didn’t like it!

CATS is getting blasted by the critics. I saw the trailers, it looked awful. Terrifying and creepy CGI.

CATS is getting blasted by the critics. Is it just me or are Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals simply unsuited for translation on-screen? With the exception of Evita (the best movie that Madonna has starred in as the lead), I can't think of any movie adaptation that enjoy positive reviews from critics. Phantom the movie got slammed too if I recalled, although in hindsight, I personally thought it wasn't that bad. Not great, but not utterly awful. There was also Jesus Christ Superstar the movie version, but I haven't seen that one yet.

CATS is getting blasted by the critics. I took my daughters to it on Tuesday and we enjoyed it. I certainly wouldn't say I loved it, but it was fine. None of my girls were very familiar with Cats, so I gave them a rundown on the way to the theater: really no plot to speak of; originally a book of silly poems written for young children; one cat is going to be chosen to go to heaven and the show really is just various cats introducing themselves (or being introduced). And with that, we settled in. The most fundamental problem, I think, is that live theater has a certain energy that is very difficult to translate to a movie screen -- maybe impossible. And Cats, more than any other show I've seen, depends on that live energy. Without it, the movie suffers. The music is still great, but it's just not the same. I also really didn't like how they "changed" the melody of one of the songs, but I've since learned that it's the way it was presented in the original production in London. I still don't like it, but I guess it's good to know that they didn't just change it for no reason (which, apparently, they did for the Broadway version that I'm familiar with). I'll hide any real spoilers other than to say that, as you may have surmised from the trailer, Victoria ( i.e., the white cat) is much more integral than in the stage production. I think Francesca Hayward did a nice job in the greatly expanded role. I also really liked Ian McKellan as Gus (and he was among my daughters' favorites). Rebel Wilson and James Corden were not great. Macavity's role is also greatly expanded and they developed an entire subplot around him kidnapping the other cats who are vying to be chosen by Old Deuteronomy.
Another change was Growltiger became a separate character who was helping Macavity, rather than just part of Gus's memory...reducing Gus's role.
Taylor Swift was also fine, although her role was more limited than I thought it would be and she was integral to the Macavity subplot by drugging all the cats with catnip.

going to see hello, dolly on the 21st I almost went to Tucson to see this. I saw it in Tempe last year and absolutely loved it. They got a new Dolly about 6 months ago-that’s why I wanted to go again. I also saw it in New York. It’s so much fun. I just smile through the whole thing.

this place is practically empty. I heard they cancelled a couple of dates in Canada because tickets weren’t selling.
