Hello,
I am a representative of Cristo Rey St. Martin College Preparatory School in Waukegan, Illinois. We are overwhelmingly low-income and many of our students attend the school based on their merit, not their financial qualifications. We have a volleyball program that we are trying to make sophisticated. However, we are struggling with an incredibly small budget and poor facilities.
We share a space with a local community center that we have learned the hard way to lock our stuff. We recently had over half of our volleyballs stolen from our space, which was left open by another group. We have learned our lesson and now take the volleyballs home every day to keep them safe. It proves difficult to practice with only 12 volleyballs.
Also, we have an ancient net system, the old school gym kind that has weights at the bottom to keep the poles upright. It is a huge safety risk. I am constantly afraid that a player is going to ruin an ankle hustling for a ball. We have no padding or anything of the sort since we cannot afford it.
I appeal to anyone out there who could spare a few volleyballs to our program so that our wonderful students can enjoy a real volleyball program that they can be proud of. Also, if anyone has an older net system lying around we would be so grateful to be able to fundraise (through our players volunteering their time at a Volleykids program) to have holes put into the ground so that we have to worry less about our players severely hurting themselves. If you can spare anything or know anyone who can, please put them in contact with me.
My student-athletes do outstanding work in the classroom and in their community, they deserve better opportunities on the volleyball court.
Thank you!
