Super weak teams on the men's side. Last year the FIVB set up the "Open" and "Grand Slams" to here most countries didn't send their top teams to the Opens. That seems to be continuing, except We've sent at least 1 top 3 team in each gender.

Points will definitely come into play as well. Teams that don't care about points because they have obvious main draw status (Ross/Walsh) can afford to go to Fuzhou as a warm up.
Others may be letting a high point finish at a Slam last summer fall out of their entry point calculation and therefore are skipping Fuzhou to preserve those higher points.

Anybody know what's going on with Carambula this year? I know he's going olympic qualifying route for Italy but I don't know if he has a partner yet, and I see a few Italian teams and he isn't included. Also see Lup is playing with someone else? I know it's not a big tournament but would think Carambula would be trying to get as much experience as possible in FIVB in trying for his Olympic run.

Given his relative lack of points and the fact that there isn't a 2nd Italian men's team that is likely to finish in the top 15 for FIVB, he may be trying to go the Continental Cup route to get in. Lupo is only playing this event with a different partner. He is registered with Nicolai again for Lucerne.

Did Rogers or Slick get injured? I don't see their team listed among the first round matches and one other team now has a bye.

Main draw matches aren't listed yet... They are playing the qualifier right now

Not a good day for N. American teams, USA & CAN go 0-5 in the Men's Q.
I just don't understand Casebeer & Montgomery as a team. I'm not trying to bag on Will, but he's an AVP Quali level player right now.

I'm guessing Casebeer played with Montgomery because Will has some points from previous events. I will agree that Jeremy certainly merits a more talented partner.

Jeremy reminds me a little of Luyties or Blanton. You watch him play and think about how good he looked and then realize he somehow managed to lose.

Lane having an impossible time siding out against a lousy German team. From 9-9 she was easily dug on six straight points to lose. Terrible effort by her and Kim, hopefully they bounce back

Ricci is a hall of famer with 7 open wins, a gold medal and is one of the best of the golden era of the sport. Dain with 9 open wins, a beach gold medal, 2 time Olympian and a hall of famer. The kid has a long way to go before being compared to 2 all time greats.
