I never had a problem with Devonie when I had her for club matches. I was always pretty happy when I found out she was going to be reffing my court. I also thinks it has been a trend in the last five years with double calls getting looser and looser. If there is such a problem with how she calls her matches, I do not believe she would be reffing high level matches. I have played very few matches where I thought the refs were consistent from start to finish. Now I am not a ref and have a question to pose to the refs and disgruntled hooligans on this forum. As a ref, do you call doubles more on certain styles of setting? For example, a girl/boy who has "softer hands" and a slower release compared to a girl/boy who has "slappy hands" and a quick release of the ball sets the same ball with a little spin on it. As for me it all depends on how it is released from the hands of the setter because there are so many different setting styles. For example, USC's setter (carry lmao jk), Plum, the Iran men's national team setter, Feng Kun, Dani from Brazil, Tomkom, Glass and the list goes on... My point is.. if it is a double, lift, carry, etc it is a fault. I hate the "rule" when people use, "Oh it was an athletic play, and I was trying to set the ball..." No.. You get there and square up. However, since it is the rules you have to be generous.. Ugh.. ha ha.. On this whole, "consistent" mumbo jumbo. I am not a fan of it. Call it as it is. What are you teaching players if you can't set but yet get rewarded because you're trying to set. I don't believe in self-esteem. Everyone fails but it is up to the individual to get better. As a setter myself I HATED being called for doubles and lifts, so I practiced everyday and eventually got better. I am a libero now, so I am not complaining.. Ha ha..

UpRefsEnemy - You should really stop now. Yours is one of the worst entrances onto Volleytalk I've ever seen. You clearly don't have a great deal of volleyball experience, and you're just embarrassing yourself (and your kid, too).
If there was a bad call, so be it. It happens all the time, and your daughter will learn that on the court and in life, things are not always fair. Step back and let that happen. It's one of the many life lessons young players gain from playing their sport. Watch other, more experienced parents and emulate them.
Now, just let it go and walk away. My kiddo' never played on a ct she reffed so you can get off on that tangent. You put far too much thought into that line of thinking. Look, i gave my opinion on the dozen or so matches that i have watched her ref. if peeps' on this site don't like that too bad. Out...

I got in to officiating at the encouragement of several coaching friends. We work tigether to better the match and the game. In most conferences assigners depend freatly on ciach feedback. If she was as bad as you say she wouldnt last long in Big Ten and other top conferences. I accept your right to comment. I find it disheartening you interjected your venom in an inocuous thread regarding a judgement call just because her name was mentioned in passing. starting a thread on specific refs and their quality would be one thing, but doing it here smacks of a personal agenda. My original offer stands, I am available for rating your job performance any time.

I'd like him to clarify his multi-colored ball comment.

One minute, nothing; next minute, this thread escalates into something vile.

Your proving my point: Thin skin. She's probably a real nice person. Just not a very good ref... Not a very good ref who worked as R1 on a national championship match at age 32 and just did an FIVB course. And learn the difference between your and you're. You're already looking dumb enough.

Thin skin...see through thin...now i'm just havin' fun! If your daughter could see you now... You seem to be an incredible role model for her, and I'm sure she'd be very proud to know what you're posting publicly on the internet about someone you know nothing about. Keep it up. Nothing like an anonymous forum to bring out people's true colors.

Not that he needs me to say it, but Ruffda is correct. Doubles are called based on either seeing or hearing the double contact of fingers on ball. It is possible for a proper executed set to have some spin and refs are taught to avoid calling a double based on that alone. Unfortunately, it still happens sometimes.
And by the way, anytime a ref is calling something the same way for both teams, even if those calls aren't perfect, consider yourself lucky.
