The Early Commitment Conundrum: College Coaches and Club Directors Weigh InSeems to be a pretty hot button issue right now, so here's the link to the PrepVolleyball article. It is a pay site and if you don't subscribe, you should. prepvolleyball.com/2015/05/06/the-early-commitment-conundrum-college-coaches-and-club-directors-weigh-in/The "article" is simply responses to JT's request for on the record responses regarding early recruiting. Here are the coaches who replied... - Josh Steinbach, Villanova Head Coach (PA, D1)
- Mike Schall, Triangle Club Director (NC)
- John Pierce, SW Virginia Juniors Club Director
- Laura Fossier, Excel VBC Recruiting Director
- Don Perkins, Kean College Head Coach (NJ, D3)
- Brian Begor, Renaissance VBC Club Director
- Bryan Bunn, NC State Head Coach (D1)
- Beth Nuneviller, Aspire Recruiting Director (AZ)
- Joel Anderson, Chicago Elite Club Director (IL)
- Tony Carrow, Nebraska Elite Club Director
- Christy Crislip, AVA Recruiting Director (TX)
- Steve Hargrave, Dallas Premier Club Director (TX)
- Dan Kaplan, Vision VBC Recruiting Director (CA)
A pretty diverse cross-section of coaches. Extremely varied opinions also. Hargrave specifically has some interesting comments on the Nwanebu situation. Several don't see the early recruiting as a problem at all.

Wow! The Director from Dallas Premier Club was a little harsh! But I kinda agree with him...just not his tone?
This is an excellent article and makes me even more proud of my DD's recent decision to wait till her Jr. year to commit. Some colleges are still waiting for her and some have moved on. BUT in the end she will choose the best fit for her life and future not just because they are a Top 25 school and can pressure her into a commitment before she feels ready.

Thought Crislip was rather blasé about the whole thing.

Of course most coaches don't see early commitment as a problem, they're the ones pushing it. Of course there are a few parents doing so too, but way more coaches. Our DD was called almost daily "have you made up your mind yet?" " when will you know?" "What's keeping your from making up your mind?" This was as a soph in HS.

A coach calling a recruit that is a sophomore in H.S. would be a violation. Coaches can ask the club coach for them to call, etc....but a college coach can't call directly to recruit.

Why would you kinda agree with him? If your DD decides to transfer after her sophomore year from a top 25 would you want a Club Director making comments "on the record" like that on a volleyball site? (it's rhetorical I know your answer)
I found his comments to be vindictive like he has an axe to grind. All the programs he mentioned are not top 50 programs, and any Club Director worth his salt would know a player on a full ride scholarship for volleyball would not have time to work and there are rules for Athletes on scholarship working during the school year (unless that has changed recently).

First of all, his personal comments about Ebony have no place in a public forum.
As the parent of a 2016 D3 commit, I'm not sure if she's falls into the "too early" category, or if she's just going after what Mr. Dallas calls "table scraps." Jeez!
She visited several schools as a sophomore, and then visited several more early in her junior year. After each visit, we had her rank her school choices (considering major, coaches, campus life, etc). Every time, for the last 2 years, the same school ranked #1. That's where she committed. I guess she likes "table scraps."
It is hard, because school #2 on her list offered her 2 weeks after committing to school #1, and that offer included scholarship dollars. When we discussed it, I could tell she felt pressured to go after the money, but we assured her that the correct choice had nothing to do with scholarships, and everything to do with the right fit. Thankfully, the D3 school is still where she feels she belongs, and we support that.

Maybe I should clarify...although I think that he made good points about a parent being an advocate for their child, I don't agree with him being so harsh and putting his thoughts like that on a public forum. USC would have waited for her to make up her mind....but I think sometimes parents get caught up in the process and the excitement too. It's a huge decision and I hope that she lands somewhere where she can find some peace.

Unless your DD was receiving calls from different university coaches, they are only allowed to contact kids once a week.

I guess she likes "table scraps." It is hard, because school #2 on her list offered her 2 weeks after committing to school #1, and that offer included scholarship dollars. When we discussed it, I could tell she felt pressured to go after the money, but we assured her that the correct choice had nothing to do with scholarships, and everything to do with the right fit. Thankfully, the D3 school is still where she feels she belongs, and we support that. After reading his response 3-4 times now, I really don't have a problem at all with Hargrave's comments or tone (and I'm pretty sure I've never met him). The specific comments regarding Ebony's case ARE appropriate in this case because 1. she CHOSE to explain her specific case in a public forum and, well, the entire topic appears to have been, at least in part, prompted by her very high profile decision to transfer. Besides, this is a very teachable moment for the articulate young woman (and she is a woman, not a kid) regarding putting yourself out there as a blogger, editorial writer, commentator, reporter, etc, a profession she may want to pursue someday. When you do that, you need to understand that some others will disagree with you, maybe take umbrage with what you say--vehemently, and sometimes even viciously (and Hargrave was NOT vicious in any way). Doing what she did (and I applaud her decision and eloquence) means you have to have tough skin. And, I believe you are being unfair with your out-of-context reference to Hargrave's use of "table scraps." I took his point to be that the VAST majority of kids who put just as much blood, sweat, and tears into all that youth sports involve never will have the "Golden Tickets" of full ride offers to Top 25 programs laid at their feet, and, therefore, it is hard to feel pity for, let alone even identify with, the few who, as he put it, won the gene pool lottery. Remember--this entire topic of early recruiting involves such a miniscule percentage of the youth volleyball population. At any rate, he was clearly referring to MONEY, as in "table scraps of a D-III school's academic offer," not the quality of the school or vb program itself. (For the record, my daughter played vball at a small D-III school and loved every minute of it. I was not offended.) Finally, simply as a "read," Hargrave's was one of the few responses that actually kept my interest all the way through, and that's the best compliment I can give it. Few of the others broke new territory or even approached the level of compelling.
