Well it looks like things are getting interesting in the Midwest Region of DII. Malone University announced earlier this week that they are leaving the GLIAC to join the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). It looks like they might not be the only one according to this article: www.bennettrank.com/collegebasketball/malone-move-mean-gliac-g-mac-d2/The GLIAC has traditionally been one of the more "premier" conferences in DII. However, it looks like a possible private vs. public debate could be happening here as well as it has in other conferences, divisions, and areas of the country. I would also say that the GLVC has been passing the GLIAC in the past couple of years from a volleyball perspective (as well as other sports) anyways, but this could cause some interesting happenings in the Midwest Region over the next few years. From a strictly volleyball perspective, it could be very good for G-MAC volleyball which only has one team of any significance (Cedarville) right now. If the GLIAC eventually finds themselves without Ashland, Findlay, and/or Hillsdale; that would weaken them some. However, they will still have Grand Valley, Ferris, Northern Michigan, and Saginaw! I actually think that if it all pans out that it could be a good thing for the individual schools as well as volleyball in the region. Helping the G-MAC to get stronger while the GLIAC still keeps some powerhouse programs will overall help the region to get stronger as a whole. In terms of the GLVC, I don't know if this has any impact on them whatsoever. Just wondering if anybody else familiar with the region has any insight as to what is happening with these Ohio GLIAC schools and if a definite conference shake-up is in the works.

GLVC surpassing the GLIAC? If my memory serves me correctly just just in the past 2 years the GLIAC had a team in the national semifinals. It's cyclical with the GLVC and the GLIAC. Malone is better suited in the G-Mac. Hard to run with the big dogs.

Here are the results of last year's GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament! The 2013 results were similar. The GLIAC still has its powerhouse teams. I'm not saying that, but top to bottom the GLVC has been stronger the past two years. glvcsports.com/sports/2014/10/2/WVBALL_1002142756.aspx

so you are basing the results of the crossover tournament on which conference is better?. If you aren't winning the region and heading to the Elite Eight, then you aren't dominating the other conference in region. Simple as that. You don't get banners for winning the crossover tournament.

Right. No one cares if you're better in October.

I am going to try this again! Yes, the GLIAC still has its powerhouse teams. The top two teams in the GLIAC are arguably still better than the top two teams in the GLVC! I agree with that! That was not my point! My point is which conference is now better OVERALL!!!! The GLVC is a much tougher conference right now top to bottom! You can see it in the crossover results and you can see it in the Pablo rankings as sevb just pointed out.
GLVC (Avg. 73) Bellarmine 130 Drury 58 UIS 145 Indy 27 Lewis 25 Maryville 105 McKendree 36 S&T 35 UMSL 52 Quincy 85 Rockhurst 13 USI 51 St. Joe's 153 Truman 7 William Jewell 173 Parkside 69
GLIAC (Avg. 131) Ashland 121 Ferris 10 Findlay 53 Grand Valley 15 Hillsdale 97 Lake Erie 253 Lake Superior 245 Malone 156 Michigan Tech 129 Northern Mich 99 Northwood 195 Ohio Dominican 137 Saginaw 55 Tiffin 168 Walsh 225 Wayne State 144
G-MAC (Avg. 207) Alderson Broddus 217 Cedarville 92 Central State 296 Davis & Elkins 242 Kentucky Wesleyan 160 Ohio Valley 176 Salem International 275 Trevecca 212 Ursuline 196
I included the G-MAC as well since that was part of the original discussion that I was trying to make to begin with.

Based on the Crossover, there could be something said for the GLVC but, in the only two matches in this year's NCAA tournament. Ferris beat Lewis and GVSU beat Rockhurst.

I guess I just disagree with the premise of the argument you're using to compare conferences. You can't be better "overall" if you can't make it past the other conference in the regionals. You can't say that the GLVC is better than the GLIAC if the best GLVC teams can't beat the best GLIAC teams.

Wow, Vballgirl88, you posted that info at the same time I was posting my comment. I do agree that the GLVC is getting stronger overall. Sad to see the decline of the former powers from the U.P., Mich Tech and NMU.

Love Pablo rankings but Findlay beat Indy and McKendree at Crossover and had a better overall record than both of those teams even though Pablo ranking is not as high. Just food for thought

Or will this raise the bar for the current GreatMidwest programs?

I'm curious as to if the administrators (assuming the coaches already know this) understand the significant drop this will mean. Having seen the majority of the G-MAC school's over the years as well as the GLIAC, the differences in :scholarships, GYM, webcast, support services, locker rooms, etc will be drastic. I hope this means the G-MAC will up their game. Playing a match at Findlay is nothing like playing a match at Salem. A few of the G-Mac schools will be similar but the majority will be under par. This will definitely help the competitive balance switch in terms of G-MAC earning more bids to the regional tournament. WOW.
