I saw this in another thread and am curious. What programs do you think are powerhouse? I wonder how geography factors in. I'll start in this order. Not saying I'm right, this just comes to my mind. Penn State Stanford Texas Nebraska I'll agree in part. But Nebraska's last national championship was in 2006. Penn State wins it almost every year to the point of ridiculousness. I've heard several people say volleyball should just skip the season and give the trophy to Nittanys in September.

Stanford and Nevraska have been at the top for a long long time.

Stanford and Nebraska have the most tournament wins. Stanford last won in 2004? PSU and Stanford have been in every NCAA tournament. Texas has been in many of the recent Final Fours (missed in 2011 but were there at least in 09, 10, 12, 13 & 14).
Last few years.... Yeah I guess so and I'm pretty satisfied.

PSU had a great run of national championship appearances from 1997-99 with one national championship, then 4 straight Big Ten championships from 2002-2006, but were upset in regional semifinals in 2005 then lost in the finals in 2006. They have been quite dominant since then. So I would say they have been dominant for more than just a few years...but I agree Stanford and Nebraska's history goes further back. And a great point was made, PSU has been a part of every NCAA tournament...

Lately: PSU, Texas, Stanford, USC Historically: PSU, Nebraska, Stanford, Hawaii, (Kinda USC) Agree pretty much. "Traditional" is a bit ambiguous. Obviously, teams like Long Beach, Pacific, Hawaii, and UCLA were always in the championship discussion 10-25 years ago;, so, they have "tradition" and "history". But, only Hawaii and UCLA have made any waves the last decade (by getting to a Final Four or two). Stanford was dominant prior to PSU's run, and is always in the discussion as an elite program. If you look at the last decade of on-the-court results, it's a no-brainer that Penn State, USC, and Texas are in the Top 4. That final spot could be Nebraska or Stanford based on having won a national title, Final Four and regional final appearances.

Nobody is going to mention Long Beach?
3 championships with 3 generations of players, they've missed like 2 tournaments.
Not saying they make the cut but I'm just surprised they are not in the conversation.

By the AVCA Rankings Years in the AVCA final ranking as of last summer Nebraska 32 Stanford 32 Hawaii 31 Southern Cal 30 UCLA 29 Penn St 29 Texas 28 BYU 23 Florida 22 Pacific 20 UCSB 20 Ohio State 19 Long Beach State 18
Top 5 Finishes Stanford 22 Nebraska 16 Hawaii 16 UCLA 13 Penn State 13 USC 12 Pacific 11 Texas 8 Long Beach 8 Florida 8 Washington 5 Wisconsin 3 BYU 3
And this is interesting Most seasons finishing at #1... UCLA - 7 (including years they didn't win the title...did they not have a post season poll at some point?) Penn Stat 6 Stanford 6 Nebraska 4

I think the "top 5 finishes" list is fairly spot on with how I would rank the teams (maybe bumping psu up a couple spots).

Long Beach used to be a traditional power. They are no longer.

Long Beach used to be a traditional power. They are no longer. bottom line, you have to come up with some sort of time frame. Hawaii is a powerhouse if its past 20 years, they arent if its past 10. Wisconsin is if its past three years........ If you narrowed to somewhat recent history, its clearly Nebraska, Stanford, Texas, PSU in no order.
