I was secretly hoping Vansant could make it in Rio as the 4th OH. She's young with lots of potential. She has the size, is a very good attacker and a decent passer. Anyway, I am just not a fan of post-NCAA Hodge/Easy, maybe because of her unsteady passing and reception. Who will Karch take as the 2 Opposites? Murphy, Fawcett and now Lowe are very capable. IMHO, Fawcett is very good off-the-bench and with the double sub and I think she's a lock for that Opp spot. Just I don't know which lefty Karch will take. Glad that Banwarth really solidified that libero spot. She's very steady in everything, not flashy but she gets the job done. A HUGE UPGRADE OVER DAVIS. This has been debated a ton without a known conclusion but I think Karch is only allowed to take 12 players (not 14) to the Olympics so the fourth OH might be either a serving specialist like what Tama was during the London Olympics or a defensive specialist in case Banwarth gets injured. I think it's risky to go with just one libero. Who's the better blocker and server? Lowe or Murphy? It's so interesting that Murphy who looked like a lock now must work and prove that she's better than Lowe and Fawcett... Last quad there were not so many questions as to the make up of the team just a year before the Olympics. This upcoming year will def be interesting. Murphy over a long stretch is still a more efficient attacker than Lowe I dont see that changing and def better than Nicole. But we can still do well with any combination so K arch can experiment however much he wants and let newbies get playing time. Really a bonus.

Unofficial DataVolley StatsFIVB Official StatsLost the serving and passing game for the third straight time this weekend. I realize that Larson will help when added, but that still concerns me a bit. I really hope that Vansant continues to get chances. She seemed to excel in all facets of the game today (against an admittedly inferior opponent).

Normally, having uncertainty in the core roster at this stage in the quad would definitely not be a bonus, but that uncertainty happens to exist with almost all of the top teams in the world at the moment. China seems to be coming together at a good time, making them appear quite dangerous for Rio. USA does well well when the fast tempo offense is clicking, but when it's not you get sets like the one in the match with Turkey. Murphy's effectiveness is maximized within the fast offense, but it's clear Lowe provides so much more versatility in attacking, despite the fact that she may not be as efficient. Any improvements Lowe can make in other aspects of her game and blocking in particular only serve to separate her from Murphy. Fawcett's skill set is pretty well set, but that skill set happens to be strong in areas that Murphy and Lowe can't really compete with very well.

When I look back on the double sub I see Haneef Park who was great in the double sub role and also could play within the system if Destinee was unavailable to play.
When I look at the current double sub Nicole is great at blocking and can definitely have her moments hitting. But, if for whatever reason our #1 opposite went down or was unavailable I would be uncomfortable with her solely in that position deep in the tournament in Rio. Especially, because our system relies heavily on using the opposite to score points at will and really hold the block for the outsides.

Dixon looked great today. If she continues to play like this, she's going to Rio. I miss Glass. That is all. Lol Lauren gibbemeyer isn't so bad either. She had 10 pts. One more than Dixon. The 3rd MH spot will be a battle... As a Gopher fan, it sure is fun to watch a match with Dixon and Gibbemeyer spelling each other (and getting set by fellow Northern Lights alum Kreklow).

Grats to Kenya for leading their pool! Wow! Kenya is the highest ranked team in Group 3. In theory they should win the Group.

I dont understand why some think Karch should not take two lefties a lot easier to deal with the fast tempo on your strong side too one would thInk but maybe he wants some diversity there when he needs.

Overall, the first leg went well! Although I don't know for some reason, I feel like it hasn't been as competitive as previous years. Like what the other poster said, many teams are still figuring out their team composition. I'm not sure if there's been a time in international volleyball when ppl aren't quite sure who might make it to the medal round in Rio.

Next week's pool should be more interesting with three teams--Russia, Serbia and Turkey (again)--all with basically the same style of play.

Though if any of them play to their potential that could be problematic. They've all got some physical hitters and our pin blocking is not excellent without Glass and Larson.

I've thought along similar lines, i keep wondering why they don't PRESS over better. Whether it's Murphy or Lowe they tend to not press over the net as much as I would expect. Nicole does better with the blocking than either of them I will admit with actually pressing and taking away space, that's really the thing that impresses me about her the most compared to the other two. I know theres more to blocking than that, but I always feel like no matter which style of blocking you use, what area of the court your trying to take, that part is critical instead of reaching higher.
