Van Winden is also a niece of Lisa Strand-Ma'a. Interesting family dynamic: Misty & Micah Ma'a, Torrey & Adlee Van Winden, Katie Spieler are all 1st cousins... Wonder how this generation would do against their volleyball-playing parents. That would be a fun family picnic... I am sure the OCS announcers are going to have a field day with Adlee's relations,...they do their homework very well. GoPOLY!!!

Hi Jake - No homework needed since Lisa Strand-Ma'a is one of OCS' announcers. Her twin sister, Kelly (Strand) Van Winden was an All-American for Cal Poly after transferring from UCSB.

I don't know, I sometimes have to do my homework before a family reunion. Can't rely on memory all the time; it's unreliable. I recommend flash cards.

I like the match up better this year.
In 2014 CAL POLY was defeated by scores of 17-25>18-25 & 22-25.
All six POLY starters from that team return,...and, with a season of experience under their belts.
Hopefully, that will "bow" well in the mix.

2015 Projected Starters Nelson Schleis Gruenewald Petiprin Greisen Van Winden

Kelly has the "hot" factor; Lisa married Hawaiian. '-) --- jake-da-fake? ever consider the Poly of the mid-2000's?? UCSB was a top-ish 15-20 (last in 2005). Poly was on the way uppp^! :-)

Watched the match between UCSB and UH,...really no contest.
The Wahines look like a #1 club...and, as Dave Shoji commented after the match "hi CAL POLY...we will be ready".
Going to be interesting to heard what Lisa Strand (OCS commentator) will say about her niece's play,...Adlee Van Winden.
Would be a kick if OCS invited Kelly, Adlee's mom and Lisa's sister, to join her at the mic,...before, during and/or after the match.
GoPOLY!!!

It would've been more perfect if the 2015 versions were standing in the exact same positions as the older versions.

CAL POLY's 1st & 3rd sets were competitive tonite.
I think Adlee Van Winden is the real deal,...on track for BWC FOY honors.
Maybe,...should be looking to go to Greisen more,...highest team kill %.
It was obvious tonite the UH Wahines, with their height,...dominated in blocking (best in the nation).
POLY is two 'bigs' away from being a top 25 program.
GoPOLY!!!

What's keeping Cal Poly one-dimensional is that they have no middle presence whatsoever. It's probably because they lack the "bigs" as you say, Jake. During intros, I think they introduced a 5'9" player as a middle and I was wondering if that was a mistake. They also have no back row attack. They do get the ball to their hitters fairly quickly but in a predictable fashion, which allowed Hawaii to make adjustments easily. At times, they looked lost as to who should get the ball when they're scrambling on out-of-system plays. These on-court quick decision-making can be ironed out in practice. The scores were close in the beginning of sets, but Hawaii was never worried. I knew Hawaii would pull away. Cal Poly looked kind of exhausted and frustrated by the bigger block.
Whether Van Winden is the "real deal" I can't say for sure but she has potential. I think she has to work on her game more to develop ways to get around bigger blocks. Against Hawaii, her attacks were either blocked or touched a lot, but she was feisty and kept at it. In long rallies, she got the ball a lot and attack after attack, she couldn't put the ball down against the bigger block but eventually she did. I remember two separate sequences where she was 1-of-3 and 1-of-4 during long rallies.

I think Adlee Van Winden is the real deal,...on track for BWC FOY honors. Did you watch the match jake? After set 1 Van Winden was hitting a big fat 0%. After set 2 Van Winden was still hitting a big fat 0%. She padded her stats in set 3 when the match was pretty much over. That got her over the 0.100 mark. Do you realize Van Winden is only on track for FOY because she plays for Cal Poly and feasted on weaker OOC competition. For example if Van Winden played for UCI this week she would be sitting on the bench. She'd have to play behind OH1 Bubica and OH2 Dennis.

Let's compare Van Winden's total stats to UCI's Kekauoha.
Van Winden 172 kills in 532 attempts hitting 0.184 11 assists, 11 aces, 103 digs, 13 blocks
Kekauoha 171 kills in 369 attempts hitting 0.339 20 assists, 18 aces, 98 digs, 21 blocks
So who should be Big West FOY up to this point?
In my humble opinion Kekauoha is already one of the 3 best opposites in the Big West. Other than Nikki Taylor can you name 2 other Opps better than Kekauoha?
Like I said if Van Winden were at UCI she would be learning from the bench.
