Everyone is always talking about this.

I find them extremely irritating but nothing that I consider too unsportsmanlike. As someone who has pretty good knowledge of the trash talk that goes on, yelling chili cheese and other oddities might be irritating but personally if it doesn't mention family members or result in physical violence it dosent really bother me too much.

Yep and it starts with the coaches. They need to teach those kids some humility.

I always have to laugh every time someone starts to trash the HBC/LBC. Remember (or you probably don't), that boys volleyball used to be thought of as a sissy sport that only girls played. When the boys did play it was more like tennis or golf, not exactly the sort of sport that testerone-driven boys wanted to play. Then, HBC/LBC changed ALL that! They borrowed from the Puerto-Ricans who, back then, dominated the sport (not so much any more because the LBC.) They cheered on their teams and teammates. The Club was a family. They played fast and hard-driven volleyball. Now, much of what was instituted by LBC years ago is now standard for boys volleyball teams. The game has grown considerably because of the changed game. Boys cheer and chant on almost all the other teams. Boys play a much more aggressive style of play. Boys who see the new style of volleyball WANT to play volleyball now. Everyone owes a big thank you to the HBC/LBC because of these changes. Boys volleyball is a different game because of it and it is far more exciting and dynamic to watch. Yes, sometimes this approach is difficult when they don't win, like this year, because there are so many people who want to bring them down. But, remember every good drama has to have a villain. The HBC is that Club and we all better because of it! Thank you TJ, Josh, etc., and the whole HBC Club. You did more to invigorate this sport than anything or anyone has done during the same period of time!!

Obviously you are new to volleyball. I don't think HBC or LBC invented this type of play. Easily look back to clubs in the 90s. I don't mind the intensity HBC plays with. What I find interesting is how they act on the floor in between points when they aren't playing well. Players separating themselves from teammates, frustration, bickering, scuffles between players off the court, etc. That is what I'm most interested to see how this will be as they go to the next level. Maybe next week at Pan Am games and later with YNT. Maybe it is an act. But definitely is a reflection of the staff.

I am from the East Coast and was at the 18's finals. It was fun to watch, but I was disgusted by the crowd behavior towards HBC's TJ DeFalco. It was just plain classless and rude, and he did nothing at all to deserve that treatment. Even though he gets more attention than most schoolboy players, he was calm and collected the entire match and was a fine sport even though it wasn't his day. I would like to see more fire and brimstone from him, but if that's not his thing, that's not his thing.
Congratulations to Pacific Rim, they really played well, and they were very dynamic and fun to watch.

Should we thank LBC/HBC or should we thank the Puerto Ricans whom you claim they borrowed it from? I don't mind following the rules as long as I know which ones to follow....

How about thanking them both. Boys volleyball would be a big snooze-fest without them.

It would be appear that perhaps the antagonistic behavior didn't start with the coaching staff for some of the kids...
Poor sportsmanship can only be contained by a coach if the negative behavior patterns learned from a kid's environment isn't too ingrained in their head. Sometimes that behavior is all a kid has been surrounded with through their youth development.

A good coach can contain this behavior and be a positive influence.

I did not see it but I heard before one match at BJNC during the time The HBC was designated to warm up the HBC team lined up at the net and stared at the opposing team in what I would only guess was an attempt to intimidate the other team.
That is right out of a bad movie.
Their antics are often an effective strategy to winning. Once the HBC teams get momentum and go into their antics they often get into the heads of the opposing and the opposing teams play poorly. But are parents pleased to see their kid's boorish behavior encouraged and winning by getting the opposing team to play poorly?
I think a lot of people saw the HBC 18s start to go into their antics when Pac Rim called time out and were pleased to see the antics were not effective.

The HBC 15s were told by their head coach to go stand at the net and stare down 949 before their quarterfinal match as 949 peppered. History between the teams as 2 key players left HBC for 949. 949 went on to win the match and most people loved every second of it.

Puh-lease! Where is everyone's indignation that Pac Rim had to take a player from Hawaii (who ends up being the MVP), to live with them two weeks before J.O.'s, in order to beat the HBC 18's team!! What is that?! That's great coaching?! What a joke. If you really care about a level playing field, call a spade a spade.

Oh wait... But wait, you're just calling a spade a spade here, right?
