Butler might just retire if he can't keep these charges from popping up again and again. That could create a huge vacuum in Chicago volleyball unless strong leadership took over.

I say this knowing nothing about Chicago club volleyball, or Sports Performance, or Rick Butler, but the man is 60 years old. Certainly he has thought of succession planning and has trained successors. Right? He'd be foolish not to have started.

I would phrase it differently since they are not "charges" or "accusations", he admitted to the relationships IN COURT. His unfortunate and reprehensible actions that violated society's norms keep popping up again and again. There was a good post on another site that gave a citation which I will paraphrase below. Butler's lawyers' argument, in court, was that having sex with minors that he was coaching was not a good enough reason for USA Volleyball to exclude him from coaching. I will post the SOURCE of the words written by the JUDGE below so that we are all clear that these are facts recorded in an official court document and not speculation. The two relevant quotes are from this court transcript. www.illinoiscourts.gov/opinions/AppellateCourt/1996/1stDistrict/November/HTML/1960743.txtOne is a direct quote of the finding by USA Volleyball after hearings and testimony: "The Ethics Committee issued its decision, finding that Butler "had unprotected sexual intercourse and a subsequent physical and emotional relationship" with all three girls, two of whom were 16 at the time and the other 17." The other is the judge's comments on the appeal by USA Volleyball to ban Rick Butler from coaching: "Butler's primary argument to the trial court was that the "public embarrassment" standard in USA Volleyball bylaws was insufficient to put him on notice that sexual relationships with minor girls whom he coached could be cause for expulsion."

Wasn't debating the veracity of what occurred.

If my memory serves correctly, I recall that the parents of one of the accusers allowed her younger sister to attend the man's club. If they knew of the accusations, that is certainly the sickest part of the whole fiasco.

Personal opinion, I think he is a disgusting individual and am saddened by the legions of parents that put winning ahead of their childrens' safety. articles.latimes.com/1995-10-19/sports/sp-58618_1_volleyball-officials

Its almost Shakespearan in its scope- the brilliance of his club structure and training- and the fact that I personally can never forget his betrayal of what all us coaches do.

If u had a daughter who played VB in Chicago area, would you prefer her play @ Sky High or 1st Alliance instead of SP because of Butler's actions years ago?

If u had a daughter who played VB in Chicago area, would you prefer her play @ Sky High or 1st Alliance instead of SP because of Butler's actions years ago? Me personally? I wouldn't care. It would be up to where she wanted to play or where her friends were gonna play. But my daughter is 5'3" and jumped like her dad when she played. So if we lived in Chicago she woulda been on SPRI's 16-8 team or the -3 or -4 team of any other club. Butler has certainly battled these same issues for a long time. Understandable since his very livelihood depended on not letting the accusations affect the viability of his club. The whole USAV reinstatement was an eyewash cover-your-ass thing anyway. You can be an administrator and come to our tournaments but you can't coach. Wow that made a lot of sense. And right he never did any coaching at a USAV evernt.
