From counting back of now 50 years old victim, who use to be 17 at the time, it seems like he was in his mid to late 20. I remember how one of my 16 years old girls Mother came to me on the street to tell me that her daughter in love with me. I was so scared, that I cancel my girls program and coached only boys for next two years. I restarted girls program only after I got married and my son was born. He definitely broke one of the most important rule of coaching! Period, end of discussion! There are a whole lot more to this case being invoked again, than just Rick Butler's personal life and his success as a coach. This seems like a underwater battle between USAV and JVO/AAU. USAV is loosing ground in this battle, since more and more clubs are moving to JVO/AAU. I hope I am wrong, but my gut feeling tells me exactly that and Rick is just a scape goat in this battle.

It does seem bit peculiar that this is coming out again now with the new 18 open JOs happening in April and basically all the good clubs (SoCal and Texas') totally against it. Most will be doing AAUs this year. Seems a bit too coincidental.

If my memory serves correctly, I recall that the parents of one of the accusers allowed her younger sister to attend the man's club. If they knew of the accusations, that is certainly the sickest part of the whole fiasco. I was told that the father wanted her to go to Sports Performance and the mother didn't, and that this was the cause of their divorce.

If there are new allegations against Butler then they have not been explained as far as I know. So what's the new story? Is it that some people think AAU should have handled some issue differently many years ago? I'm a little lost about what the issue is now.
If the issue now is only the original issue of Butler's misconduct from around 30 years ago then please don't target only Butler. There is plenty of serious misconduct from the distant past in junior volleyball that many who were in positions of power in the sport during that time know about. Such misconduct is thankfully judged far more harshly now than it was in 1985 but if we're revisiting misconduct from 1985 for some reason let's get it all out there. My choice is to drop the 30 year old issues after reflecting back on them with sadness.

USAV has nothing whatsoever to do with this, it's strictly an internal issue within AAU. The Butler story resurfaced because AAU is being asked some pointed questions as to whether they were enforcing the package of reforms (specifically regarding background screening of coaches/officials/volunteers - something AAU has been notoriously lax about - and child safety) instituted in 2012.
The current scrutiny was actually instigated by another AAU volleyball coach.

People keep saying 20 years ago. The article says Butler was in his 20s. I'm a little confused about when all this happened. I know when he was banned, etc. From the Sports Illustrated article, Bremner said their sexual involvement began in 1987, her junior year of high school. Butler was 32, Bremner was 17.

What was the age of consent in that state at that time? It's still highly inappropriate for someone in a position of power to conduct themselves in such a way, but if Bremner was at the legal age of consent and allowed her sexual relationship with Butler to go on for 18 months, then this story falls into a more of a professional ethics issue and becomes less about Butler being some unabashed sexual predator. However, I don't know the full story with the other two young women who alleged similar improprieties.

"[Butler] says he 'dated' all three of his accusers - but only after they had turned 18 (the age of sexual consent in Illinois when one party is in a position of trust, authority, or supervision over the other) and left the program."

Jul 25, 2015 11:16:02 GMT -5 alarmclock said: And all of his actions in the years since have been to preserve his status as the owner/director of SPRI, including attempting to have a USAV reinstate him as a coach from his lifetime ban via court order (failed), starting up his own JO organization directly competing against USAV so that he can coach in tournaments again, and then partnering his organization with the AAU to host a national championship. All that effort in all those years to keep his club going and for him personally to maintain his status in the JO community, specifically in the Great Lakes region. A lot of strong-arming and a lot of bullying in the club world to maintain SPRI's elite position. I wonder how many of the present athletes in SPRI, their parents, and all the other clubs/athletes/parents participating in the JVA/AAU events know all of this information. The issue I have with this statement is it insinuates that everybody who was involved in the process of starting the JVA organization and the rise of AAU national championships as a end-destination for club volleyball season was strong-armed, bullied, brainwashed, or blissfully unaware of Butler's history. That is quite simply inaccurate and kind insulting to everyone involved. Not everything club volleyball (and far more specifically, Sports Performance) revolves around Rick Butler. The LARGE majority are simply people working their butts off to bring the best quality coaching, tournament direction, and development for junior volleyball players. Everyone who was involved in the JVA/AAU national championship movement knew of Butler's history and tactics of strong-arming/bullying/etc. would not have been successful. In terms of how many present people in the SPRI community are unaware of Butler's history, the answer would be not very many. The ones who aren't unaware coming in are usually made aware very shortly after.

somebody told me once -- someone i trust -- that certain coaches believed sleeping with their players, setters especially, was the best way to control them. i'm not naming names here and i assume this has changed since the 70s and 80s, but that's what i was told.

I have a daughter who plays for Spvb . Last year Rick was her coach. There has NEVER been any uncomfortable of awkward moments for her with Rick or any other coach at Spvb. She loves the intensity of the program and has grown as an athlete. She has said many times Rick is her all-time favorite coach. He challenges her to improve and he's a phenomenal teacher that gives her the tools and the coaching to help her improve. She is upset this is all being dug up again and is planning to support him however she can. If at all possible she wants this to turn into something positive for Spvb and Rick and his family. As she said this to me this morning.. "Maybe through this everyone will learn about his phenomenal coaching, the quality of his character that we see everyday, and how he also coaches us to be positive in life and how to be a strong athlete with strong character values. Spvb's training is one of the best in the country. But it doesn't stop there. Rick and the others really care about us. They make sure our school is going well, that we are positive and look forward to our future, and they make sure we stay away from things that could bring us down. They encourage us to make careful & correct decisions when we are outside of the club. They care about us as a total person not just an athlete. Rick and the other coaches help us develop strong character. Being caring to everyone, being honest to team mates and coaches, respecting everyone even those who are challenging us at the moment, and always being responsible. Responsible with our training, our school work and how we act. Along with the great intense training, Rick and the coaches demonstrate and encourage these behaviors and core values to us all the time. I wish ESPN knew how great of a coach Rick really is." Many Spvb girls, my daughter included, will support Rick and the program however they can. I wouldn't want my daughter to have to choose to play anywhere else.

i knew Julie Bremner while this was going on- her life is forever changed. Rick Butler is also a brilliant coach. Do we forgive and forget atrocities- do we bring our best Christian values... She was not of age when this happened. Rick may not be banging anyone's daughter anymore and perhaps has turned a new leaf- my personal opinion is now he just loves a the control he has- I'm sorry to sound so crass but I really struggle with him being a successful millionaire... However if he has truly dedicated himself to the betterment and success of young women then maybe I need to reevaluate. I just struggle with Butler every time his name is mentioned
