Power Players in Division 3 for the upcoming season
Stevens Tech: Can't count out the reigning champions. Especially with what they have returning in NCAA Tournament MOP Tim Ferriter preparing for his senior campaign and former first team Chris Vaughn returning to his position at OH. Former second team AA Gabe Shankweiler to back those two up. Plenty of talent returns down the middle as well. Despite having to replace Ryan Seifert on the RS, their biggest question is how John Eddins fills in to replace criminally underrated setter Kevin Ackerle.
Springfield: Lots of firepower returning starting with NCAA Tournament standout RS Greg Woods as well as OH Ricardo Padilla Ayala and MB Joseth Irizarry Feliciano. With the rumored return of for MOP Luis Vega and a few potentially impactful transfers, the Pride will be loaded with terminators. The only question that remains is replacing 3 time National Champion setter Keaton Pieper. Never count a Charlie Sullivan coached team out. A former women's lax student-athlete student from Springfield told me she firmly believed they would have won a national championship if Charlie was their head coach and he doesn't know dick about women's lacrosse.
SUNY New Paltz: Possible addition by subtraction with the graduation of S/RS Jon Lujten. Without Lujten senior All American S/RS Christian Smith will most likely have the chance to run a 5-1 with 4 of 5 hitters returning (only having to find a replacement on the RS). No squad is better down the middle with the combo of senior Christopher Hussmann and junior Steve Woessner. If Radu can keep the ship out of choppy waters I'm not sure there is a more talented squad in the nation.
Nazareth: Talk about firepower baby. Three time All American OH Tim Zyburt leads a strong group of returning hitters including OH Grant Levermore, MB Chris Mahan, and RS Josh Heib. Sophomore setter Jake Kemp will benefit from being the sole conductor of the train and running a 5-1 for the full year. Although MB Luke Lawastch will be a huge loss defensively, Kemp always struggled to connect with him down the middle so his replacement may be an upgrade offensively. Finally, with Juniata transfer Tommy Kesling enrolling Cal Wickens may have the solution to his libero situation.
Contenders:
Juniata: Have some strong returners lead by 3 year starting setter Matt Elias and 2 time All American Chad Albert, but also too much unrest with the program and whatever direction they may be headed
Rutgers Newark: Showed they are more than capable of throwing some haymakers, but not sure they are able to actually knockout any of the real power players. Return 6 of 7 starters only needing to replace senior OH2 Alex Barnard.
UC Santa Cruz: An excellent 2015 campaign was ruined by a poor performance against Nazareth in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Still the only D3 team to defeat Stevens last year returns a lot of talent led by last year's freshman sensations S Evan Kittle and OH Lake Merchen. The big questions will be replacing senior leaders Brandon Torado and Jake Landel, as well as the recent departure of Coach of the Year Todd Hollenback.
Questions:
Will Carthage be able to defend their inaugural MWVC against other mid-western darlings Dominican, Mount St. Joseph, and Lakeland? And will a MWVC be enough to get one of these schools an NCAA Tournament bid from Pool B.
Will there be the fourth UVC team who can contend with the conferences "Big Three"?
Does Baruch continue their CUNYAC dominance and if so, will they be able to make an impact on the national level?
With Kean graduating 5 of 7 starters, is this the year that a school like Ramapo can finally snatch the Skyline crown?
Who of the GNAC's three best will emerge as the conference's big dog: Lasell, Rivier, or Wentworth?
Will there be a first year team such as North Central or Wittenburg who can make a name for themselves with a big upset?
Which incoming freshman are going to make the biggest impact this upcoming season?
Who are some underrated or under the radar players that are going to make a big leap for 2016?

A) Why would you not let Christian Smith hit? BTW, his little brother is headed to NP and may be better.
B) Hunter is still looking for a men's coach, so at this point, yeah, Baruch's looking like a good bet.
C) Wentworth could be the #2 seed in the East this season.
D) I'm very curious to see what North Central can do.
E) A lot depends on how Juniata puts pieces back together but Rutgers Newark could go undefeated in conference and I'm looking forward to seeing their schedule to see if they are in position to claim a top 3 seed in the tournament.

Remember watching Steve Woessner back in club and was surpriesed that no D1 program picked him up. Athleticism, size, and length. Great attributes to train with. Glad he has found success at the division 3 level

D) With 22 freshman coming in NCC season intrigues me very much E) CVC looks to be top heavy for yet another year. JC and Rutgers Newark are the favorites. Perhaps Marymount or Stevenson can make a push this year.

I'm curious as to what NYU can do this year. The big significant loss is Quirk but with Ben Oxnard waiting for his time they should be fine there. Can the members of the team make good decisions (on and off the court) and stay healthy? If so, I don't see why they are not in the mix. MIT had a great season last year considering that their 2 time AA libero ran their offense. I heard they picked of a setter from CA and Brandon can go back to doing what he does best! Vassar had a lot of youth on the floor last year and qualified for the UVC tournament by defeating MIT. They also have the co-rookie of the year running their offense (Lee) and had solid production by freshman middle (Knigge). In addition, their libero(Cimorelli) and opposite (Kriz) did well for them. Not sure if they can contend with the "Big 3" but they will play spoiler. Elmira loses their libero (Shade) and opposite (Smith). Question is, do they allow Carlos back after what happened last year? If so, they could be dangerous. Carlos dominated the stats prior to his departure and Ellison and Griffith will be seniors and ready to carry the load. Don't know much with what is going on at PSU-Behrend and I don't think many are worried about Bard.

With 72 teams in D3 this coming year (someone please confirm), does that mean 11 bids? Isn't the formula 72/6.5? That is slightly over 11. That would be great. How come D1 does not have to follow the "formula"?

Every year, there is talk about Vassar, MIT, NYU, Baruch, and Stevenson. But it seems that all of these programs are having trouble taking that next step to get to the tier with Juniata, Springfield, Nazareth, Stevens, Santa Cruz, and New Paltz. Elmira, Carthage, Rivier and I'd put Wentworth in the group that are typically in the in-between land, capable of beating a top-tier team, but only like once a season. The rest of the midwest is still in the we're waiting to see who becomes what phase. Why More Colleges Should Add Men's Volleyball as a Varsity Sport

Which of these schools is one of only 3 programs to qualify for every NCAA tournament? Which of these teams has made it to the Final 4? Which one of these programs has more NCAA tournament wins than Juniata, Santa Cruz and New Paltz? If you choose CUNY - Bernard Baruch, YOU WIN! SO tell me again how they are a 2nd tier program Why More Colleges Should Add Men's Volleyball as a Varsity Sport

I've got no argument for the Final 4 year, they were legit, losing 15-13 to Springfield in the fifth in the semis.
The depth in the CUNY certainly helps NCAA qualification. And you're going to wrack up wins when you're playing the opening round every year because you're one of the four lower seeds. Those are hardly cases to make if you're trying to claim you're a top-tier program.
One stat to back up my claim is where the coaches in the country feel Baruch sits. In the past four years, the team has finished right around tenth three times in the final AVCA poll, with their final four year being the only exception at third. Over the same period, the six teams mentioned as top-tier finished outside the top ten a total of two times. Naz and New Paltz were each outside the top-ten once during the past four years at the end of the season. Aside from that, those six programs were inside the top ten to finish in each of the past four years.
I agree though, Baruch belongs ahead of the other schools I listed them with. They are certainly more accomplished, recently, than the others. Historically, NYU and Vassar have cases to make if we look longer term.

All are talking east coast, very few are even seeing mid west. Yes I am a Mount St. Joseph fan. They have their all american Alex Vohland back, one of the Randolph brothers will be their new setter so they won't loose any ground there, and they just recruited two new big middles, they will be ready. However if anyone has paid attention to middle hitter's commitment list the MCVC had a field day. From 2 to 10 should be a battle royale, very competitive. They definitely deserve an AQ.
