There was some pretty good defense in that last set. Anderson has been clutch as well as Christenson and Shoji. Last point ended on a shank by Sander then Anderson free balls it out.

Very cool for Speraw to call Brazil's serve in to overturn R1's call.

Pretty wild to see the Brazilians so disrespectful to an official after winning a game. I've never seen anything like that.

Pretty wild to see the Brazilians so disrespectful to an official after winning a game. I've never seen anything like that. What happened? After they won two or three of the players immediately went over to the R1 and started talking to him. Some of the team had their hands up like "glad that this is over cause our ref sucked" just weird to see Professional volleyball atheletes so rude to an official.

Some of the team had their hands up like "glad that this is over cause our ref sucked" just weird to see Professional volleyball atheletes so rude to an official. To be fair, this was one of the worst officiated matches I have ever seen. Not just the R1, but the line judges as well. Must have been a half dozen bad calls that went in the USA favor. Since this wasn't an official FIVB match, there was no replay challanges. There were a couple of times I thought Bernardinho's head was going to explode. It got so bad, that for a while, every time an official made a correct call, Bernardinho would sarcastically give a thumbs up. The double on Micah (mentioned in another post) that wasn't called. The ball just about went through Micah's hands. And, it wasn't called. Even the USA bench was laughing about it. While it was a great match, the officiating (all Americans) was an embarrassment to American Volleyball.

Anyone know who the official was? It's my understanding that since we're hosting we can choose our officials. I would assume they're FIVB rated officials?

After watching the match the officials were terrible. And not the reason the US lost. But just terrible in general. You won't see him on the stand in the next 3 matches.
The US had opportunities to win each set they lost. Many miscues on the floor. Besides the awesome freeball out of bounds by Anderson to end the set. You had David Lee set a freeball over the net on one. At least US won the point, but really top notch. Then there was two players going for the ball. Followed by both of them stopping and watching it hit the ground. I believe it was Russell and Anderson. Who knows maybe they are a bit rusty.
But the officiating was terrible. Maybe they should NOT stream the matches. Hahaha.

That was an exciting match. Bruno and Sergio showed they're masters in their respective positions. Totally outplayed their American counterparts. Micah had his moments but had location issues particularly in long rallies. Shoji needs to be even better in serve receive than he's shown. Brazil won the serve pass battle as expected. I thought Sander overall did pretty well receiving the lion's share of the serves unfortunately he broke down at crucial times. Sander didn't seem to get set very much prior to game 4 where he responded well and the US came back from 7-2 deficit to cruise in that set. Anderson did pretty well. Wasn't in the passing rotation much but got set a ton. Closer to the take out the trash OPP role. It's so exciting watching him attack when he's really going after it. Such a quick arm. Very exciting series of points early in set 3. Sergio with three brilliant digs in a rally. Then a few points later makes a perfect dig off his face (then had to get brief medical attention). Next point Anderson nearly decapitated him but luckily he gets his hands up in time.
It's funny how animated Brazil gets for a friendly. I'm glad both sides are taking this series seriously. Not just for the sake of the fans but obviously this is important prep for World Cup.
Was this pretty much Brazil's A team? Is Wallace their top OPP? Is Murillo still above Lipe?

Murilo has better ball control than Lipe but Lipe's a more reliable attacker now. Believe Wallace is recovering from injury.
Already mentioned A teams both sides playing to win.

Pretty high quality play. The teams were going at it and the competition was high. There were many all out defensive rallies that displayed the "never-say-die" mentality of both teams (36-34 set?!?!). The sense between the coaching staffs was that it was a no-holds-barred affair. The only difference was that there were no video challenges (it was funny seeing the coaches get up and signal "C" with their hands out of habit). If you're on FB USA Men's & Women's Indoor Volleyball Fan Zone posted video of a Matt Anderson ace from the end line. I don't think he held anything back... www.facebook.com/pages/USA-Mens-Womens-Indoor-Volleyball-Fan-Zone/293577044082477?fref=ts
