That actually begs the question, how good is Florida State?

Why is Caroline Knop playing outside? Not that she is doing a bad job. I mean, she has the most kills on this Michigan team. But are the other hitters just not performing well? Wondered the same thing. Injuries? Looking at box scores, Rosens are using different lineups. Maybe that's all it is.

Why shouldn't she be playing OH, would be the better question. Because she's 5'8? Smaller players can do a fantastic job. They often learn to play smarter and harder than their bigger counterparts so they can compete, and so far, so good for Caroline!

Let's look at 2014: Michigan State - BEATEN BY #1 STANFORD IN ROUND 2. Not an upset. Illinois - BEATEN BY #8 FLORIDA IN ROUND OF 16. Not an upset. Nebraska - who had a rough regular season, gets upset by BYU in the the ROUND OF 8. BYU ended up in the Championship. Ohio State UPSETS Kentucky in the second round, nearly upsets WISCONSIN in the round of 16. Well, somebody has to lose, right? Wisconsin loses to PENN STATE in the round of 8. Again, somebody from the Big Ten has to lose. What exactly are you looking for? 4 in the Final Four? Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio State overachieved based on their Big Ten season, and MSU got paired with a #1 in the second round, and two teams had to play two other Big Ten teams. Is it because Penn State has the only title from the Big Ten? Do you know how few teams have an NCAA title? 10. Choosing one year hardly refutes my point. How did the Big Ten do prior to 1991? Who has all of the Big Ten's national championships and the vast majority of Final Four and championship match appearances? If you take Penn State out of the equation, the Big Ten historically has not been that impressive. Any success the Big Ten has had on a national level occurred only after Penn State joined the conference. You can keep Nebraska out of the discussion as they are relatively new to the conference and their best years were as member of the Big 8 and Big 12. Well, in the last 30 years a school that is in now in the BigTen has been in every Final Four except two, 92 and 02. So let's take PSU out of the BigTen. That eliminates 6 more years 93, 97, 99, 07, 10, and 14. So that's appearances in 22 of the last 30 Final Fours... with 3 NC's in their 10 Championship match appearances. Historically, I'd say that pretty impressive. Taking out Nebraska is more damaging to this Final Four appearances number than taking away PSU. That eliminates 9 more years 86, 89, 90, 96, 98*, 01, 05, 06, and 08* *NOTE: PSU and Nebraska were both in 98 and 08 Final Fours. 94, 95, 00, 09, 12, 13 where years where either PSU or Nebr and another B1G team made it to the Semifinals. So without PSU and Nebraska, the BigTen has had teams in the final four 15 times. And played for the title 3 times. May just be me, but even with the lack of a title, that's still impressive.

Why is Caroline Knop playing outside? Not that she is doing a bad job. I mean, she has the most kills on this Michigan team. But are the other hitters just not performing well? Seems to be a number of factors. First, the only one that could definitively answer this is Mark Rosen, but I think it is a combination of factors. There are a total of 5 outsides on the roster, if you even count Caroline who actually went to Michigan as a L/DS. Last year, due to injuries to Ally Davis and Kelly Murphy, both redshirt Juniors in 2015, Knop and Adeja Lambert were forced into starting roles on the Outside. Both held their own, but went through growing pains as the team went 13-17. Davis and Murphy are back from their injuries, though Davis has been slowed by other nagging injuries following recovery from her ACL tear in last year's B1G opener vs. Purdue. Murphy looks great and is a very talented and smart player. But Lambert (B1G Ten All Star team) and Knop (US Women's Junior National team) benefitted from playing in Europe this summer. Add to the mix, Carly Skjodt, prepvolleyball.com's high school Senior of the Year and you have a competitive gym environment that makes for tough decisions for coaching staffs. Perhaps Knop's ability to play lock down defense across the back row is a differentiating factor? She did make the B1G All Freshman team (1 of 7) as an OH in 2014. My guess and sense is that it will continue to be a competition for playing time at the OH spot all year long at Michigan. Not that these things matter, because they truly don't, but it was Knop that was named the tournament MVP at the Bobcat Classic at the University of Ohio this weekend. Stay tuned. You never know what will take place next with 17 players on the Michigan roster this year, with everyone battling to get on the court.

Are any Michigan matches from this season online? I think if you go to Ohio University's site and look at archived matches, you may still be able to watch the match between Ohio University and Michigan from Saturday, September 5th. The LSU and Xavier matches vs. Michigan, may be partially covered. Nothing is available from the prior weekend when Michigan defeated George Washington, West Virginia and Oakland in Ann Arbor.

Caroline is an outstanding player AND has the best hair in D1. Every time my budding athlete sees her play, my daughter says "I would love to meet her and ask what she uses on her hair?"

Not sure about the hair but have noticed the bandanas she wears. Hope that she and her Michigan teammates continue to play head and shoulders above the competition.

Gotta love posters who always find the positive in things. It's ok, the Buckeyes haven't gotten credit for big wins for years now... It's always something wrong with the team on the other side of the net. I was hoping for a split. But the Bucks dominated for the most part (ignore set 2 yesterday)
