when, such as this year and I know from Lane Carico's final season, Miami (current tuition room & board 66 Grand) and other privates manage a roster that, in Miami's case anyhow, the only player on the roster Identified as a Walkon when she joined the team is Michelle Marenus, of the crazy expensive Lourdes High School. Can a team, as baseball does with its absurd 11.7 scholarships that have to be divied somehow among 36 players, and if so, how would that be done? I remember when Savanah Leaf, who was a superstar, transferred to Miami WHILE being happy she was gonna make the team markedly better, I was also ecstatic that her mom is a gazillionaire who at the time was either CEO or COO or one of those boardroom jobs with PIXAR. Now I dunno whether Miami asked her to forego a scholarship and pay tuition the way children of rappers and pro athletes often do, but I always wondered.
That said, Michele Marenus (Lourdes Miami Herald 8A POY) is in the 9 player rotation for Miami, and from her class (a class where Miami signed 2 Dade players from different classes to NLIs and later got Marenus as a preferred walk on who was like Brooke McDermott (TERRA {which incidentally is The Environmental Researcn Academy - not sure what that second R Stands for} HS Class 8A-6A POY from Miami Herald and co-Athlete of the Year with her fellow Hurricane signee), and Sylvia Hernandez (Westminister Christian - Miami Herald 2013-2014 co-Athlete of the Year,a Miami Herald POY via Class 3A) are three of that Dade Centric Sophomore Class.
The only reason I mention this is because while walk on Marenus is in the playing rotation, a fully publicized NLI signee in McDermott has not played this season. Nor has late add Samantha Purnell (signed by Miami in July, likely a redshirt AFTER Mhairi Agnew, a Scotland National team signee, opted to stay home to play for The University of Glasgow).
So fourteen of sixteen Canes have at least seen the court, and nine of the 14 have seen signifant minutes (including Greek International UCLA transfer Strantzali and Swedish International National Team in 2013 & 2014 - Was awarded an unspellable award given to the Swedish National Team MVP in 2014 - Anna Haak who was named Outstanding Player for Sweden in the Commonwealth Games this summer, and was named HS POY in Sweden on a Prep Team that went 39 and Zero).
So is it likely all who play regularly but Marenus are on Full Boats, or is it allowed to give partial scholarships to all, and if a player who signed a full grant in aid deal is not in the rotation, can that be reduced and combined with another bench player (maybe cut two on full rides to half scholarships) so that a player like Marenus can be rewarded with a scholarship)?
I know how Miami maddeningly rewards its 11.7 baseball scholarships (Miami has not given a full ride in baseball in more than a half dozen years) and if you follow baseball you would be amazed who gets how much aid from the baseball team. I am wondering how Miami in particular and other big schools, in particular private schools, award their 12 scholarships as most teams have more than a dozen players? Thanks for any help, even if it is pure speculation.
