The Italian JNT had a wonderful little match against Wingate last night, and heads to Chapel Hill tonight to train over the weekend and play Cambell on the 6th and end their trip with a match vs. UNC on September 7th. They're here preparing for the u20 World Championships in Puerto Rico and I just wanted to point out how much we're enjoying the southern hospitality so far. Wingate had a packed crowd, FIVB official, and even a local Italian crushing their national anthem a cappella. I was tempted to post last night how Wingate had won the 5th 15-13, but it was 4-0 for the Italians when we played the last set. Wingate played tough and hung in there for most of the match, and the crowd was making some noise too. Great atmosphere. I was stoked to see that Wingate's in-house ESPN crew had 6 cameras going and what I saw of the broadcast looked great with some cool graphics thrown in. Italy is currently ranked 5th in the u20 rankings. Are any of the Italy players eligible to be recruited by D1 teams here in the USA , or are they already making too much $ if they play in the pro league ? How do their top players compare to our USA Junior team's top players in terms of national team potential ? How many from each team seem like possible NT starters in the future ? Seems like a cool opportunity for Wingate as a small school to host such a major event, looks like they pulled it off very well.

I've seen most of these players on Italian pro team rosters - by U20 I can't imagine any of them are still amateur. Nicoletti played on Gibbemyer's team, Bonifacio on Hill and Klineman's.
Egonu and Orro were the stars of the Youth team that kicked our patooties at the World Championships last months - elite athletes definitely worth watching.

If Egonu was from Newport Beach instead of Italy, there would be a thirty page thread on VT speculating on her college recruitment. Spectacular player.

Predictions of how North Carolina will fare against Italy ? Seems like Duke should have been in the mix also ?

I thought the U20 Italy team s the same team that USA U20 played several matches against this summer? I think the USA U20 team (Poulter, Fitzmorris, Alhassan) only beat them 1 time (Out of 3 or 4 matches)and that was the tournament championship match....
Orro and Ebonu played for the U18 Italian team that won the FIVB U18 world championship vs USA.
Is this Italian team a mixture of the youth 18 team and the junior u20 team?
I would think only a few NCAA teams could compete with a mixture of the U20 and U18 national italian team.....

The match with the Italian Junior National Team was very entertaining. Egonu is an extremely exciting player, though not really refined yet. The Italian setters and middles were also very good. The match itself was very close with the last 2 sets going into the 30's and the 5th set going well into extra points as well. Both coaches were rotating lineups quite a bit and treating it very much like a scrimmage. In the 5th UNC played several players who don't see a lot of time in matches.
I think it did help them get their rhythm and confidence back for the Stanford match.
