Why is the white man always being blamed for everything? You mean like the Civil War? Which one.....................the current one in Syria? The white man is responsible for what happened for this thread to be created. This poster is calling out Duke, he is either cranking us all or he should go to the media and scream RACISM as if Duke does not already have problems in being perceived as a Elitist Bastion of the WHITE MAN

I remember the original post...it's just minor changes like formatting (for example spelled "bizarre" as "bizare" originally). Plus he added "Duke University" in the title, probably because he was tired of people who didn't read the entire thread sending him messages asking which university this occurred at. Also, someone did ask for updates... Correct!! Sandpit, good points about Networking and talking to folks if hanging out after matches for a bit . I can't be certain but I always wonder if middle aged and older men are perceived as creeps but harmless and good supporters of the game. But myself as a mid thirties middle eastern man which is the age group of people on watch lists etc. I could be targeted as watch out that man is a threat! He is capable of causing harm!! If people recognize you as a regular, they will introduce themselves to you. In my experience, it's usually the moms (of the players) who do that. But then again, I'm not middle-aged, so my experience is probably different from the majority here. This is also why, unless and until you've gotten to know the players and parents a bit, you should keep the conversation strictly volleyball-related. You can talk about other things once you've established that connection (this is a matter of basic social skills, so use your judgement). Also, don't be too excited to meet them: I can imagine many posters here who might get a bit "starstruck" if they met their favourite coach or player. EDIT TO ADD: As I mentioned in my previous reply, my main concern is how volleyball fans, especially male volleyball fans, are sometimes strerotyped as "creeps" or even "stalkers". That's why I have taken such a interest to this thread. It's not just about touchline or Duke. This has potential implications in terms of attracting fans and growing the sport. I assume many, if not most, posters here are middle-aged (or close to it) and male: so what if someone decided you were a creep?

Thanks for some of the well thought out responses, starting with Newenglander. Since some have urged to name the school, it was Duke University. Of course this University has been the subject of all sorts of claims involving the athletic department and former student athletes that you've seen in the news. The criticism I made was regarding that someone looked inexperienced at the OH position, making too many unforced errors. Some possible parents hearing that and me simply standing in the bleachers after the event looking for anybody I know that might be there, probably provoked a few to size me up as not belonging there. Would it be different if I was another race standing there by myself? Not sure. What's actually creepy is that event staff even smiled at me while I was there and even exchanged pleasantries, and a family even asked me to take a photo of them with their student athlete. Meanwhile someone is secretly calling the campus police, while there are several uniformed athletic event staff members just standing around having a good time. I don't get approached till I'm in the darn parking lot at my car. If there was any concern at all couldn't a staff member do their job and speak to spectators and clear up anything?? I will need to get a refund for my Football tickets and even precious Basketball tickets at the school. Looks like the General Counsel's office will do that since I brought up that possible profiling took place and asked them to investigate. I guess legally they can ban anyone unless its discriminatory, but this is a tight rope in my opinion. Again I don't blame the coaching staff, in these situations they gotta please the parents, over some random spectator who works with a local club. I was considering attending the NC State Match this weekend, but probably will pass on it. Don't want any headaches. I don't want to invest in lawyering up over this. I attached the email I got from the lawyer about submitting receipts for tickets purchased. I have been to probably over 10 matches at Duke over the past few years and never had any issues until this one time. I know people that go to the matches from a local club and talk with them when I see them at the matches, but otherwise I keep to myself. It seems someone implied here that knowing someone there is a prereq to attend. I attached an email I got from the Lawyer's office there. I blocked all individual names on it. View AttachmentI had a feeling it was Duke. Sounds like N. Carolina to me. And when you said they had a lawyer contact you... total Duke move. I'm actually surprised that the school in question turned out to be Duke. I had family that moved to the Durham-Chapel Hill area, so I had been out there a handful of times, including a couple months ago when my partner and I went to a funeral and attended the Duke-Wake Forest match. As a Jewish male, I thought the area was culturally diverse and aware, even at the volleyball match. We didn't realize it then, but looking at some of the pictures that we took at the match, there were a lot of single guys of all races that were in attendance. Attachments:

Also, I would still try to sort this out if I were you, touchline. You never know what the implications would be down the road. I see that you did try to get some character references/letters or support, which would have been my suggestion had I stopped lurking earlier (I'm surprised at how long it took for someone to suggest that). This should have been done right from the beginning but you can't turn back the clock. If I were you, my strategy would be more reconciliatory as opposed to the legal/ACLU route. Try to prove (as opposed to merely stating) your innocence and/or make amends.

This is getting old and tiresome. First of all the original poster refuses after numerous times to reveal the exact works that were spoken. We weren't there so we have no idea what was said nor do we know the manner it was said. This is a red flag in MY opinion. The fact that this poster came on this site instead of going to the media considering that he feels he has done nothing wrong is suspect. If you want to trash a D1 Univetsity, you need to back that up. For the certain posters that are crying racism.....look at your own words before you throw a stone.
I'm personally of people throwing the race cars out there. In MY opinion, you are the biggest racist out there. Get a !!!!###$$$!!!ing life.

If ur asking what I said during the event, it's been posted before. I said "That player is making too many unforced errors" and "That player is inexperienced." Based on response I got from people there it ended up being nothing really noticed at all. I didn't go to the media yet because I was hoping to get it the issue dismissed without making a big deal. I got contacted from people there by using this thread so it helped. In the end I may end up sending the info to the media.

You hear that touchline, you be a good boy now and reveal yourself to press asap so we can get our jollies off. Don't worry about backlash for whistleblowing, it's your duty as an immigrant to do as we say you're not black so no concern of getting arrested by police. If you get a black van outside your residence, that's just your paranoia talking. YOU MUST BE A GOOD BOY OK DON'T DISAPPOINT VT.

We have no idea what happened considering we only have one side of the story. That's the problem. After a month, he has not went to his local media, where, if for instance there was wrong doing. Instead, he has used our message board to unfairly, without proof, to trash an institution. Give us the facts please.

I feel as I don't know you personally that if you really like to watch volleyball, don't go by yourself and bring a friend with you. As a parent of a past player I would freak out if someone I didn't know started saying things about my daughters plays. There are so many predators out there and you just don't know. You want to protect your child so if someone stands out as different you are going to mention it. It's also a safety measure for ALL of the young ladies on the team.

Dude, your daughter is not in danger from random guys watching volleyball matches. Mariska Hargitay is LYING to you.

Why would strictly volleyball-related comments be a red flag? Of course, this is yet another reason regulars of volleyball matches should get to know the players, parents, and coaches. Eliminates fear of the unknown.
