How much better would Penn State be this year if Rose had red-shirted Micah during her freshman year. He had a returning setter (Carpenter) who led PSU to the National Title the year before, and after one game she lost her spot. No wonder the announcers in the 2013 national championship indicated that previously the players at PSU were not playing for each other. Micah's freshman year at setter was not that great, (Carpenter would have done just as good) and if she was red-shirted that year, it would make this team much much much stronger.

I always see these discussions where people talk about redshirting as if the students in question have nothing better to do with their lives than to stay in college an extra year. Maybe they don't want to take five years to get through college.

You've made an interesting post, but what would PSU have done for the 2012 season--for Carpenter's senior year?

Mmm, second-guessing the guy that's won more titles than anyone...this should be good. [munch-munch]

Freshman redshirts are mostly planned. Rose (and Carpenter) knew there was a one-year gap between Glass and Hancock.

Who is Micah, he or she never played for Penn State? You lost me there!!

I'm gonna go out out on a limb and guess they were trying to win a title that season and that gave them the best chance to do that. The decision actually had nothing to do with setting.

VB does not redshirt like football. The sport is different. It's not like football where certain positions require a year (and sometimes 2 and 3) of conditioning, strength training and skill building before a player is ready. Top VB prospects are typically ready for college ball when they arrive on campus -- not that they don't have a lot to learn. It is not that unusual for PSU players to be all-Americans their freshman year.
Ali Frantti had 22 kills on .405 hitting against Stanford in her fourth match last year.
So.... Hancock might have redshirted, but she was a terrific player and Rose thought his team had a better chance with her on the floor. Her serve alone meant redshirting was not going to happen.

PSU was extremely fortunate to get her. She was committed to Tulsa but then the coach there left; meanwhile, a player Rose had recruited to be setter didn't work out, so PSU needed a setter. My guess would be Hancock knew Rose well and he knew her well -- the volleyball world is small. When you get an offer from a program like PSU or Stanford that is a big deal.
