I had a discussion offline with another season ticket holder on Red shirts. It didn't occur to me that a player might want to decline a red shirt, and either a) compete for a spot right away and b) not drag out her education. So it may have been a non-issue.
With that in mind, let's hope Saunders decided she wanted to compete for a spot, and he didn't just burn a redshirt on 1 point early in the season.
I personally couldn't wait to finish college. By my senior year I was ready to go out and be productive. Now that it's been almost 25 years, I'd happily go back to not being productive!

Maddie Smith came in? There goes her redshirt. Surprised by that actually I'm not. She came in as a serving and back row sub for Gilly. And she wasn't going to redshirt. She's a walk-on. She may be paying in-state tuition, but it's still cash money.

Gillis hitting .500 (as of right this second). Impressive play? or not much block & defense from RU?

At the end, Madison came in for someone and had a really nice line drive down the right. Smith came back in and subbed match point.
At the end of the day, I don't think we played as well as we should have. Yes, we held them to a low hitting percentage, but they were falling all over themselves with mistakes. We should've passed and dug better and been more dominant from the service line.
Maryland is a much tougher-serving team. We need to get our game cleaned up.

Opponents Hitting % vs Rutgers this season Northwestern - .301 Illinois - .433 Purdue - .360 Indiana - .200 Wisconsin - .395
They probably should have hit higher given there was only one block but fell right in line if comparing Rutgers other opponents this season and where they should be.

They got the match in and got out of there without anyone being hurt, so I will take it and be happy.

OK... so I'm back. New Brunswick never fails to surprise. It started absolutely pouring about 15 minutes before 6 while I was on the train. I had to buy an umbrella at the RU bookstore by the train station. Walked over to the gym and got there about 15 after. There were warm-ups going on. The badgers got through blocking drills and then everybody just stopped, and I noticed some official people in the corner, including the Rutgers AD, chatting a bit. They wiped up some water on the right side, and then on the left side. Then they left a towel in the middle of the floor, and a bunch of people just stared at it for a while. Once in a while they would move it. Then they announced the practice would continue at 7:15 in the gym annex right next door, and the game would play at 8PM if the court was deemed playable. No word on what would happen if it was not. The nice lady who was running the camera for BTN came down and asked us what was going on. She was just as clueless as us.
The badgers basically sat down in their chairs and started looking bored. Lauren was off somewhere with Gilly most of the time, but the rest were there. They tried to stay loose. To pass the time they started playing this game where Dilly would juggle the balls to Bates or Morey and they would pass them back. It was pretty impressive, as much for Dilliy's ability to juggle three large bulky balls at a time as for Bates and Morey's passing accuracy. At one point Dilly started juggling to each in turn, which was even more impressive to me.
In the meantime I had a conversation with someone wearing a badgers T-shirt who was there last year, and happens to be in the math department at RU. He was in Madison during the 2000 final four year, so we got to talking about Sherisa. There was another guy there who was a Rutgers alum visiting from Moore, Oklahoma where he is working as an engineer. We had a terrifying conversation about hail and tornados with him. There were other badger fans there as well, but a lot more Rutgers fans than last year, which makes sense because it was not the day before T-day. Official people kept coming out and staring at the towel and walking away. The linesman came out and checked to see if the lines were straight. People were desperate for something to do.
Then suddenly, 20 minutes before hand the teams start warming up again. The lady with the BTN camera who was just set up in the aisle behind us, asks us to stay seated because she can see all our heads in the camera and we'll block the view if we stand. That's right, there is one camera, and no designated place to put it. I though they used to have Basketball in this gym back in the old Big East days? They probably caught the back of my head a few times, especially when I got up to clap at match point. When they announced the players it became apparent that Amac had a contingent in the stands, because she got the loudest roar of any player introduced.
The match started off quite strangely. Taylor Morey had three bizarre shanks on passes in the first 5 points. Sheff was looking at her like, "what the hell?" She had a really tough first set, easily the toughest I have ever seen from her. I also felt, both during warm ups and the beginning of the match that Carlini's connections and location just seemed a touch off at times. At times she looked really tired out there - although she had a couple great pull back sets where I don't understand physically how she can avoid going into the net. I swear I stayed away from her so nobody can blame me for getting her sick, if she is. I hope she isn't.
Rutgers really tried to play scrappy, and frankly I don't think the badger floor defense was that good in the first 1 1/2 sets. They seemed to be picking on Gilly a fair amount. But Rutgers was also really error prone in attack, and sometimes there were some inexplicable plays on their side of the net. The guy in front of us was complaining "why are they celebrated after a play like that!!?" After the first half set though, the block stepped up and there were long periods of the match where Rutgers simply could not get the ball over the net. On the other side we actually had a hard time sometimes putting a ball down at times, Bates and Gilly had some strong swings that were picked up by their libero, because they were hit right at her. But eventually they would get another chance, and another, and UW would win the point.
Sheff let Kriskova serve, and the badgers scored two points off of it. The first was actually handled pretty well by RU, the second completely ate up the receiver, the third was out...barely. It was interesting to hear everyone's response when she served though. There was an audible "oh." Definitely a complete change of pace. The service game really stepped up about halfway through the first set, with Haleigh being the first really effective server. Eventually Morey and Amac had really strong periods at the service line. Gillis not so much. Having seen the serve live, I think I know what you guys are talking about. She does not look at all confident.
So in the end, I felt like that was not a polished performance. We really didn't click until the third set, and parts of the other sets just felt sloppy. Sometimes that can happen against a team whose offense maybe isn't that well oiled....strange things can happen, balls can end up anywhere. It's not what you are used to seeing. And there were distractions. But in the end the block brought things under control - I really think Tionna was the player of the match. She's looking really really good right now, as is Nelson. Thought Kriskova looked comfortable as well. Rutgers really tried to serve quite aggressively...I imagine that is the only option open to them...but the passing could have been better. Although we had a hard time putting the ball down in periods -- it sounds like the hitting percentage was OK. I think that is down to being relatively error free.
Interesting factoid. The parking lot behind the College St gym is supposed to the place where the first football game was played. Growing up in NJ it made sense to me that it was paved, cuz we always played football on asphalt growing up. They tell me it was grass in the day, though. I found that disappointing.
Oh and I got to say hi to Amacs family and father...staying a safe distance away. Just told them we think their daughter is great.
OK. Going to bed!

Just looked at the stats, and my impression was right. Very error free ball - only 4 HE's all match. We may have been hitting conservatively because we didn't have to do anything special. Rutgers with 25! Eleven of those were blocks. Tionna with 6.
I forgot...in the third set Morey had three aces in a row. We had seven all told in the match. We'll see what the serve looks like against Maryland.
