Warriors seventh in AVCA preseason poll
By Jason Kaneshiro, Star-Advertiser
December 10, 2015
Coming off its first appearance in the NCAA championships since 2002, the Rainbow Warrior volleyball team will open the 2016 season ranked seventh in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I-II Men’s Preseason Poll.
UH ended the spring ranked sixth in the poll following a 24-7 season that included a four-week stint at No. 1. UH’s placement in the poll released Wednesday is the program’s highest preseason ranking since appearing sixth prior to the 2011 season.
BYU received 13 of 20 first-place votes and will open the season at No. 1. The Cougars visit the Stan Sheriff Center for a two-match series March 2 and 4.
UC Irvine is second in the poll followed by defending national champion Loyola-Chicago. Long Beach State, UCLA and Ohio State also were voted ahead of UH.
The Warriors open the season Jan. 7 and will face King, Harvard and No. 8 Lewis, last year’s national runner-up, in the Outrigger Resorts Invitational.

Warriors making adjustments to positions By Stephen Tsai December 11, 2015
For University of Hawaii men’s volleyball coach Charlie Wade, the poll-position announcements signal the approach of a new year.
“The season is coming quickly,” said Wade, whose Rainbow Warriors have completed fall training.
A day after being voted No. 7 in the national rankings, the Warriors were selected sixth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation poll on Thursday.
“The preseason rankings are based somewhat on last year’s performance,” Wade said. “I’m not that concerned about the preseason rankings.”
The Warriors return their three best passers — libero Kolby Kanetake and outside hitters Siki Zarkovic and Kupono Fey — and setter Jennings Franciskovic. “They’re two of the first three contacts,” Wade said, “which is comforting.”
But the Warriors are seeking to fill vacancies at both middles and opposite. “We’ve had every middle play opposite and every opposite play middle,” Wade said.
Stijn Van Tilburg, a 6-foot-8 freshman from Amsterdam, is the leading candidate to succeed last year’s opposite, Brook Sedore.
Last year’s starting middles — Taylor Averill and Davis Holt — graduated. Zach Radner, who was projected to start, decided to focus on his engineering studies. Vaughn Wellenreiter did not return for his senior season. Kekoa Pukahi went on a church mission. Freshman Patrick Gasman will miss the season after suffering a fractured foot.
Wade said several players have auditioned in the middle, including left-handed Iain McKellar, a converted opposite. An intriguing option is Franciskovic, who recently was measured with a 45-inch vertical jump off a running start and a 12-foot touch.
“Jennings is just a Pogo Stick right now,” Wade said.
Wade is experimenting with using Franciskovic as a middle/setter who would block and then circle to set in the same sequence.
“We can be a little creative,” Wade said.
Except for the liberos, Wade noted, the players are not tethered to one position. “We play volleyball,” Wade said. “Everybody has to play everywhere.”

I do it all the time on my current team, but that's mainly because we don't have a middle.
It's very interesting at this level, as is a lefty playing in the middle. Looks like defections and injuries gutted their middles.

Wow, just looked at Hawaii's roster and if Tilburg takes over at OPP, Siki is OH1 and most likely Fey at OH 2, that leaves a lot of talent on the bench. I'm very concerned with Hawaii's lack of a MB/MH this upcoming season....

I'm very concerned with Hawaii's lack of a MB/MH this upcoming season.... Hawaii brought in an uber load of pin hitters. A whole bunch of them won't see the court this season. I just hope they stick around though. Hawaii has the makings to be a deadly group in 2-3 years.

Was really pulling for McKellar to get a shot at OPP, but with the lack of MB/MH on the team Coach Wade is just trying out anyone there to see who sticks. Who are the actual MH prospects on the team, and I don't mean the ones being asked to move from their other position to play MH, but the actual current MH prospects on the team?
