but that comment was in reference to carrying the ball. and carrying the ball is not allowed on the first contact. the fault lies with the refs not the rule book. SmokeDogg's comment was made in general without any apparent prior reference, so how do you know what he was referencing?

oh i don't know. "explain two instances when a player can carry a ball" and every post in the thread. i also know what you seemed to be implying -- that the rule book allows refs to ignore carries. it doesn't. bad refs ignore carries.

You can legally carry a ball at any time except the time period between when the server first contacts the ball and an official blows a whistle to signal the end of a rally.

Actually I was taught by a D1 coach that you can carry a ball. I don't know if it's really a carry, more of a throw. But on a tight set, we were taught to have the hitter push the ball against the blockers arms and literally push it or throw it to the side out of bounds. When the ball is being contacted by both sides at the same time, it's not a throw or carry when you do this. He told me it was a lost art.

... the fault lies with the refs not the rule book. indeed.. the 2 instances are: 1. the ref sees but does not call the carry 2. the ref does not see & does not call the carry simple answer.. lol
