The AVCA is now accepting nominations for the 2016 AVCA Thirty Under 30 Awards. These awards recognize and celebrate coaches from across all divisions. In order to be nominated, a coach must be 30 years or younger by December 31, 2015 and be an active AVCA member. If you know of a deserving young coach, I encourage you to nominate him or her for this award. Nominations for this award will continue to be accepted through Monday, February 29. www.avca.org/awards/thirtyunder30/ Once completed, you will receive a confirmation email to let you know that the nomination was accepted. In order to avoid having the online nomination timeout, it is recommended that you have your nomination materials ready before clicking the link. Here are the requested items on the nomination form: General contact info and birth date for the nominee Reasons that the coach should receive the award List the nominees' playing and coaching experience. Also include any significant awards or achievements List significant athletes that the nominee has trained or recruited List any specific involvement the nominee has had with the AVCA. This can include committees or presentations

I'd like to add my own.
1. A written statement explaining how the nominee will react to the message board mocking that will naturally occur after the list is released 2. A promise not to flame out and become a pharmaceutical rep for the next five years or before your 34th birthday, whichever comes first.

Just wondering what the negative stigma is attached to this award? And if such a stigma exists why do they continue to put this list out?!?!

Past years are at the bottom. Click on some from several years ago. Many of them are no longer coaching or really haven't done much in their careers since being named a Thirty Under 30. Likewise, a few have developed quite productive careers. Edit: The former is much more common, which is why this award is treated as it is on this forum.

It's a running joke for sure, even outside of just this forum. But I was wondering what the actual numbers say. But I'm too lazy to do more than 2009. But that's far enough in the past that "the curse" would look to take over the list.
15 Awardees. 4 out of coaching completely or unknown. 3 moved out of college coaching to club. Big thing to remember is many of these coaches who win this award are high school or club coaches who may or may not aspire to further advance to the college ranks.
2009: Lindi Bankowski Currently: Unknown. (Previously Mississippi State AC, 2011)
Brittany Baume Currently: Teacher for an online public school (K-12) company. (Previously Wittenberg AC, 2009)
Ben Boldt Currently: Iowa Western AC (Previously Arkansas AC 2014)
Ryan Campbell Currently: Cornerstone University HC (Previously Cornerstone University AC)
Caitlin Faulk Currently: Unknown (Previously Broward College HC)
Becky Fletcher Currently: Frostburg State HC (Previously SUNYIT HC)
Kyle Gamble Currently: Club Coach Amarilo Jrs. (Previously Tulsa AC, 2011)
Todd Garvey Currently: Purdue VA (Previously Mercy Academy HC)
Chris Gaskill Currently: Assistant Director, TCA Juniors in SoCal (Previously Iowa AC)
Kelly Greapentrog Currently: St. John Fisher HC (Same position when 30under30)
Emily Hawthorne Currently: Club Coach (Previously, HS Coach)
Kristina Hernandez Currently: Stetson HC (Previously Hofstra HC)
Michael Johnson Currently: Associate HC Notre Dame (Previously, Xavier HC)
Gretchen Killebrew Currently: Out of coaching (Previously, Seattle U AC)
Matt Martin Currently: Club Coach HPSTL (Previously, Loyola Men's AC)

Is there an option for coaches to "decline" their nomination?

So then this award wouldn't be a good resume builder for a young coach? I was thinking of nominating someone but I don't want to if it isn't going to help them

I was thinking of nominating someone but I don't want to if it isn't going to help them In a general sense, it is something nice to have on a resume. The reason it catches a lot of flack is because no one really knows how the final list is determined and it is no indicator of future success.

I'm not sure I would lump the ACOY into the arbitrary category. 30 under 30 could be a great award if say the awardees won based on some kind of merit. The only requirement is that they meet the under 30 age requirement and that the nominator write something to the effect that they are a great coach, yada, yada. There isn't something tangible involved there. The ACOY would normally be nominated by their HC and I believe in committee the candidate is chosen based on the merit of the case made by the HC. Usually someone on the committee can back that up or turn it down. I spoke to someone on the awards committee at convention last year and in some cases, the winner is due to lack of nominees or because the nomination is so compelling it is the best choice.

A job in pharma can be pretty rewarding. If this award helps a person get one, it sounds like a good deal!
