Had a Coney Island Hard Root Beer tonight...awful. In my somewhat limited experience, all of those alcopops are nasty. It's not surprising -- they start from the cheapest grades of alcohol and then try to process all the bad flavors out of it before covering it up with sweet and/or fruity flavors. The one time I tried a Mike's Hard Lemonade at a BBQ, I took a couple sips and then fed the rest of it to a shrubbery. But if you don't want beer and yet want something similar, there is starting to be something of a cider revival in the US. Here in the Northwest you can get all sorts of really good ciders from craft cideries. These are mostly very good. Much better than the big commercial ciders like Angry Orchard/Woodchuck/Magners/Strongbow. But even the commercial ciders are better than alcopops.

I like IPA's and I'm in California...
Ballast Point Sculpin (regular, grapefruit, pineapple)
Lagunitas Little Sumthin Sumthin (although they make a lot of different things you should at least try)
Pliny the Elder (younger, etc)
Bear Republic Racer 5 (There's also an American IPA they make that's good)
21st Amendment in SF
Stone Brewery in SD
Firestone in SLO - anything they make
Kona Brewery - Firerock
831 IPA

My parents use old beer cans (with leftover beer in them) around the garden to trap snails and slugs.
They also use a collapsible animal trap that they purchased from Home Depot to trap annoying neighbor cats who use their garden to poop. They never told me what they do with the cats once they've been caught. I assume they just let them go but it's also possible they take those cats to a remote location and let them go there.

To quote Jeff Foxworthy, they ran away. My dad set a snare for a neighbor cat that was particularly annoying. It caught itself in the same snare three days in a row. The first two days he let it go, hoping it would learn a lesson. The third day he found it dead, having strangled itself in the snare. It "ran away", and the neighbors never did find out what happened to their missing cat.
