Think a long long time ago, there used to be a King/Queen of the Court for the top players.
Since there is a lot of talk of partners breaking up, switching...was wondering if AVP should hold some annual end of the season King/Queen of the Court.
Top 20 guys and Top 20 girls invites (or something like that. or Top 10 ranked teams get invited which would then make 20 for same gender). 4 Pools of 5 where everyone plays with everyone once. Top 2 from each pool advances to Final 8. 2 pools of 4. Top 2 from each pool advance to Final 4. (or some variation). Pool play, wins/losses 1st tiebreaker, points 2nd tiebreaker.
I would find it interesting to see how players played with other partners (see the threads talking about big blocker vs great defender or big blocker vs avg defender but great side out player). Little change up from the same old same old. Would be fun to see how say Dalhauser/Taylor Crabb play together or some odd combo of Lucena/Mayer vs Daughtery/Bourne.
Seem to remember they did this in Las Vegas at end of year.
Think there would be interest from
1) fans
2) players
3) AVP or whoever would put it on?

And, just to reference previous thread, a KOB FIVB event would be cool as well.

KOB & QOB are trademarks owned by someone besides the AVP or FIVB.
Regardless they could be fun to watch.

Yes, yes, and yes. The perfect antidote to an era where teams stay together way too long

They have done them, although it has been a few years. I personally thought they were relatively entertaining. From what I recall, once the game became Blocker/Defender based, the King of the Beach pool format favored whoever was the odd man(1 defender with 3 blockers, or vice-versa). Also, 5 person pools are terrible for king of the beach. They have to be 4. Finals used to be interesting as well where you had to pick someone who was not your partner for the season. Too lazy to look it up, but didn't Rosie and Phil play together in a final for one?

Better ask BIGSHOT WALSH if she approves before this is done.

Too lazy to look it up, but didn't Rosie and Phil play together in a final for one? It was always like that to an extent (the mismatched player got an advantage). A lot of times the pools broke down in such a way one player got a huge edge. One year the pool was Powers, Dodd, Kiraly and Hovland. Dodd played ten tournaments that year with Pat and ten with Tim and had played extensively with Karch in the past. Meanwhile neither Karch nor Hov could play the right. One year it was Karch with Sinjin, AJ, and Dodd (all defenders) I do think you have to go with four team pools, a single game, however long, with each guy. One way to make it even better is to have someone seed the pools for parity rather than on season seeding.

Better ask BIGSHOT WALSH if she approves before this is done. Well, she has played in them in the past. She won Las Vegas "Goddess of the Beach" in 2006, took second in 2007. Looks like the last time the AVP did it in LV was 2009, when Jen Kessy and Phil Dalhausser were the winners.

It would be nice if she graced the sand volleyball world with her presence at such a event. Does she realize she would be a huge draw?

Last I heard, a guy named Steve Ascher held the trademark. Steve founded Sideout when he was an undergrad at Cal (same time I was there, actually - we were slight acquaintances), and trademarked king of the beach a way back in the early 80's. He also had Queen of the Beach, and I can't tell from the above if Fonoi was actually granted the QoB trademark or not.
