Don't underestimate the culture fit. How many players have we heard say that they went on a visit to the school they committed to and they "just knew" or "everything felt right"? They can't put their finger on what it was that made that school "the one" and why other schools weren't. High level recruits could very well go visit Hawaii and have something just feel off. I'm not sure this happens too often though. More times than not, the recruits that come for a visit say that it felt "right". Most mainland recruits to the program love the Islands and the culture. And, you really feel it and see it on senior night. Also, we have our occasionoal transfer out, but there haven't been a lot. When they do, its often related to lack of playing time, and not cultural reasons. Was bummed when we lost Hewitt to back problems and Vorster because she wanted to play with her sister. Not being selfish but Vorster was really becoming a force when she decided to leave.

Wondered at the time if that had something to do with it too.

Or maybe you just don't hear about the ones who visit but don't commit. Wahine VB is the hottest sport in Hawaii. Recruits become household names practically overnight. Nikki Taylor is probably the biggest named athlete in Hawaii now. If elite recruits want instant celebrity status at least in Hawaii, but more realistically in all of VB world, they would consider Hawaii. Hawaii fans wouldl promote them on Volleytalk. After all, aren't most of the posters here Wahine fans?

Random olds talking about them? WEIRD. They just keep getting younger, too. Don't know what's up with that.

Are there not any great recruits from Hawaii? All incoming are Cali girls. How did Kan, Mau, and Anae get away? To my understanding, Anae wanted to play both basketball and volleyball. Shoji didn't have an extra scholarship for her. The head coach for the UH women's basketball team probably didn't want to give a scholarship to another player that was playing both basketball and volleyball. She already had Adolpho on a basketball scholarship who was playing both sports. I think Mau wanted to go to school outside of Hawaii. Same with Kan. The only player that I can remember wanting to come play for Hawaii that went to another school due to Shoji not having a scholarship available, is Mason. Mason ended up going to Oregon, but eventually came back to Hawaii for her Jr. and Sr. year, but not before sitting out one year. Had there been a scholarship available for her, she would have been on the team that had both Kahumoku and Willoughby that were Seniors. Not sure if she would have played, though. More than likely red shirted. I do believe Shoji does go after the top Hawaii school players, since he is known to attend a lot of the high school volleyball matches here in Hawaii. Correction: Sorry, I was getting Anae and Robins-Hardy mixed up.

IIRC, Alohi Robins-Hardy (Kamehameha / BYU) is another VB/BB kid. I don't blame Shoji and the WBB coach for wanting players to pick a single sport. I also don't blame the players who want to be two-sport athletes for learning that info and then deciding to look elsewhere.

What's the status of Taylor's Injury? Is it serious? Nothing stated yet that I can find. Also, the team may well still be on an airplane.

I just hope Nikki's injury is not a volleyball career ending one. And I may be in the minority here, but if this injury isn't a volleyball career ending injury, I do wish she would bypass playing beach volleyball for the Bows and give her body a much needed rest.

Wolfgang, I saw only one poster make mention of Iosia wanting to transfer out, and it was someone trolling the Hawaii fans on the Minnesota-Hawaii match thread. I've seen no other reference to this other than from this single poster. Is this where you are getting this from?? Iosia is not going anywhere, trust me!

Lots of Polynesians there plus I think some family?

Had the UH team not had the injuries at the beginning of the season they would have probably lost no more than 1 match...would have been a huge difference for them when the playoffs came and would have been virtually impossible for the committee too screw them like they did.....
