With most of the schedules out, I thought I could start my predictions for next season.
BYU
Pins: Miller (3rd team AA, WCC Freshman of the Year), Taylen Ballard (1st Team Under Armor AA), Lacy Haddock, Roni Jones Perry
L: Mary Lake
S: Lyndie Haddock
MB: I think there was talk of turning Cosy Burnett into a middle? Not sure.
BYU is the clear favorite for conference champions. They have a lot of talent, that is for sure. The only problem they should have is replacing the two fantastic middle blockers that have graduated.
Gonzaga
MB: Peyton Mack, Alyse Whitaker
OH: Chapin Gray (Freshman), Sarah Penner (freshman),
OPP: Abby Knapp (Freshman), Claire Barbe (Freshman)
S: Jenna Keuhn and Faith Smith
L: Tiyana Hallums
Now this year will really be interesting for Gonzaga as this team has graduated a large majority of their line up. They are going to have to rely a lot on their incoming freshman. It is nice for them to have Alyse Whitaker for some senior leadership.
LMU
OH: Savannah Slattery, Megan Rice (transfer)
OPP: Sierra Bartley (freshman)
MB: Emma Johnson, Nya Chiek (freshman)
L: Kristen Castellanos
S: Tess Reid
After the transfer of Sarah Sponcil, obviously there would be a large spot to fill. I think the issue with this team is the MB position and the setter position. There will be only 3 MBs on the roster (unless someone comes in as a transfer) and no one jumps out at me to be to be impressive. For setters, I would like for this team to run a 5-1 to give Bartley as many possibilities as possible. I think Bartley will be a great starter for LMU.
Pepperdine
OH: Hannah Frohling and Nikki Lyons
OPP: Ashley Harris, Jenna Tunnel, Heidi Dyer
MB: Jasmine Gross and Tarah Wylie
S: Jenna Tunnell and Heidi Dyer
L: Hana Lishman
I hope Pepperdine puts together a better year than last year because last year was quite a disappointment. They have all the pieces to have a great season, but it seems like the continue to fall short. I hope this year is different.
Pacific
OH: Emily Baptista, Skylar Wine, Maycie Labass
MB: Ashlyn Fleming, Janie Feldsher
OPP: Andie Shelton, Alex Holt
S: Andie Shelton, Hanne De Schrijver
L: Katrin Gotterba
With the graduation of Lexi Elman, I am interested to see who will emerge as the new offensive leader for Pacific.
Portland
OH: Hannah Troutman, Reghan Pukis
OPP: Sarah Savoca
MB: Liz Reich (freshman), Katie Barker
S: Cali Thompson
L/DS: Emma Scanlan, McKenzie Schwan (freshman)
After a fantastic year last year, I hope Portland keeps their momentum and has another fantastic season!
Santa Clara
OH: Kathryn Decker (freshman), ?
OPP: Anna McCreadie
MB: Hailey Lindberg, Jensen Cunningham
S: Kirsten Mead
L: Taylor Laugero
Santa Clara will probably have a down year after graduating so many people, but they still have some great people to work with. It will be interesting so see if someone can replace the 6 rotation duties that Hess and Clayton had.
Saint Mary’s
OH: Lindsey Knudsen, Sarah Chase
OPP: Payton Rund, Lindsey Calvin
MB: Aubrey Pitts, Alex O’Sullivan
S: Alexsa Parker, Mary Hernandez
L: Made Wilkerson
I think this team will be the dark horse in the WCC. Barring any unfortunate injuries, I think Saint Mary’s will make their way into the top half of the WCC.
San Francisco
OH: Carly Lowry, ?
MB: Laura Leap (transfer), Kate Ashman
OPP: “
S: Erin Anthony (freshman)
L: ?
Probably will be last in conference. Hope they can actually win a game on conference this year.
San Diego
OH: Lauren Fuller, Than Fayad
MB: Addie Picha, Kaity Edwards
OPP: Jayden Kennedy, Allison Eylers, Roxie Wiblin
S: Anna Newsome, Kristen Gengenbacher
L: ?
San Diego always puts together a good team and exceeds my expectations in the preseason. I hope they stay steady throughout the season because they definitely faltered off towards the end of last season.
