Am I the only one who thinks this manipulating of potential RPI is a COS? (That's "crock of s&%$" for those not in the know.) Schedules should be based on the best match-ups and best preparation for the teams, not this nonsense.

Sure, there are multiple reasons other than RPI for a team to schedule. Maybe the most important is scheduling such that best prepares your team for the rest of the season. In theory, if you have a younger team - one may want to be able to try different rotations and may not want to play the best teams to start the year? I was just speaking in terms of maximizing RPI. And Creighton is in a tough situation because the Big East could be pretty bad next year and they will have no opportunities for Top 25 and 50 wins in conference - and they will have to have some in order to get a seed. That said - they need to maximize their RPI and need to be very careful on where they get their Top 25 wins. Teams like Stanford, Texas and some others are probably too good to mess with and I think USC is too unpredictable. Agree that they probably need to play a couple teams from the B1G or Pac, but I would limit the number of those matches. The Big East could easily be a one-big league next year. Marquette loses Louis and Xavier loses two of their best attackers. Villanova and Butler should be improved, but I'm not sure if they'll get to at large caliber. Did Hawaii ever get a seed in a year that their conference was a one-bid league? Good question - I have been thinking that Creighton's situation for next year could be what is typical for Hawaii.
Without looking - I am thinking that as 'bad' as the Big East could be next year, they will not have as bad of a non-conference record (x-Creighton) as the Big West would have (x-Hawaii). Whether we call it the west coast bias or the lower teams in the Big West schedule poorly. It will be the 'quality' wins that will be necessary for Creighton - and that will only come from the non-conference.

If so, the tourney happens to have RPI as a primary selection and seeding criteria. So you may want to consider RPI if you are prepping for the NCAA tourney... If you are just preparing for conference play, or conference tournament - yeah, skip this.

But, like "strategic" fouling in basketball, it's going to happen until someone comes up with some more rational rules.

I created this "Percent of Offense and Defense Lost to Graduation" page several years ago to help our voters with the preseason poll. Coaches found out about it and requested it because it helps with their scheduling so here it is for the coaches and fans. It is a free page for all. 2016 Percent of Offense and Defense Lost to GraduationDo you have this for 2017 yet, when does that typically come out? Thanks!

I ran it on January 1 this year and will probably do the same next year.
