So, mike, honestly, you work as a pilot for a living? Flight attendant? Mechanic? Engineer? Airline office staff? I am an aeronautical engineer. (For now, anyway, if I don't get chosen to be Stanford's next VB coach.)

(For now, anyway, if I don't get chosen to be Stanford's next VB coach.) Excellent. So I want to know, for three engine planes, which is the better designed, the Lockheed Tristar or the MD DC-10. Both have ceased production for many years, but I always liked them for their distinctive appearance. I heard a lot of people say the L-1011 was the superior design while the DC-10, with its checkered early career and a list of accidents in the 70's (i.e. especially its problematic cargo door design), was stuck with a tarnished reputation. The tragic thing was that because of the Tristar's reliance on a single engine supplier (Rolls Royce), they were stuck with delays when RR when into receivership and thereby ceded the market to the DC-10. True, the DC-10 eventually overcame its mishaps and had a reasonably safe record in the 80's and 90's. But, had the Tristar been the the successful airliner, would it have changed Lockheed's fortunes in the commercial airline market? And which really is the better designed aircraft?

Airplane design is always a massive tangled ball of tradeoffs. It's essentially impossible to say "this airplane is better than that one" unless you first define "better for what?". (At least among airplanes of similar technological generations.)
But more than 50% of airplane design is picking the correct engine.

The singular version of this thread's title is one of the all-time best comedy films ever!

I'm always amazed that the wings that are attached to the body of the plane by some dinky screws don't suddenly and dramatically detach during takeoffs and landings.

I have several questions. But first, I'm in the middle of my FIFA 14 career mode and in the Champions League so that's taking up some of my time. Also, FIFA 15 is in the mail and will be delivered soon so that will eventually take up the rest of my remaining time.
Whenever I take the Denver to San Jose flight on Southwest, I get a splitting headache and some pain in my left eyelid during landings in San Jose. Is it because I was coming from higher altitude Denver (6,000 ft) to sea level San Jose? I hate flying for this reason.

Has anyone ever reported seeing a colonial woman churning butter on the wing of a plane mid-flight?

Has anyone ever reported seeing a colonial woman churning butter on the wing of a plane mid-flight? Or a monkey or alien a la Twilight Zone.

I have a fear of flying, honestly have no idea how common that is.

Anybody have questions about them? I might answer. With all of the aviation technology and advice from "the tower", how much freedom do pilots have to make decisions on the fly (pun intended) in the cockpit?

I should add: I'm not a pilot. I know much more about airplanes than I know about pilots.
