The word is her federation will not allow her to return. They want her to train with her National team. I wonder if that is the whole truth or not.
There should be a press conference soon.

I've been trying to get info from the Croatian Volleyball Federation website. First - I don't understand Croatian. Second - the site is a rather overdesigned mess. preview.hos.birosoft.hrI find it difficult to believe that Mia wouldn't at least come back to finish her degree. NCAA competition is hardly a training ground compared to the professional offers she was receiving when she made her choice. I though her reasons for playing in the US were the opportunities to play VB and get her college education simultaneously. However - it also sounds like a lot of what was going on this past year with Mia (i.e. the Russian team she played on) was beyond her control. In the end, she's going to have do what HOS tells her to. man - this is turning out to be a big mess.

Her NT can't stop her of finishing her degree. Croatia is democratic enough to allow “military” rules in a state civil institution. It’s possible there is something else, a personal reason/commitment that nobody knows about but definitely it isn't something that could be found in their Fed Rules book.

I’ve spent sometime of pointless clicking.

It's not so much that I believe they're intentionally sabotaging her college education. I heard she took a heavy course load, and she's probably close enough that she could finish with correspondence courses or perhaps find some way to transfer units from a university in Europe. I'm getting the feeling that she feels that she has to follow her federation's orders, or otherwise risk future opportunities to play on her national team and/or professionally in Europe. These are strictly my own opinions. As for some previous comparisons with the Mike Williams situation at USC (regarding keeping up with classes), I don't believe it was the same. Mia was excused to go to Europe because of national team obligations, which are treated differently. I understand that she did compete in a late Spring tournament as a part of her national team. However - the part about playing on a Russian pro team was bit bit unexpected. I'm sure any athletic dept's NCAA compliance officer would have raised the red flag on that one.

What will this mean for Cal's lineup??

I am actually not surprised to see her not returning. I had ranked Cal based on her being in the linup after sitting for two weeks, but I won't drop them much initially, because they are a well rounded team. If only they can find someone to "go-to" they'll be fine.

If only they can find someone to "go-to" they'll be fine. I say Camille Leffall. She's a quick middle with a heavy swing and incredible hops. I think Cal will be fine without Mia (although I'd like to see her back). One of the problems in the past was that Mia was almost too good, and opposing defenses would cheat on her. Cal didn't have a big middle or back-row attack to counter these defenses. I felt that Cammille was underutilized.

I think it means they'll be spreading around the offense a lot more. Cal have won some key game's in the past two years without Mia (injury). I believe the can continue without her.
The previous post was correct. Camille was greatly underused. She will be their go to girl when she's in the front row.

How was it with her? IYM!!! Certainly Mia took charge of any ball coming near her. Her digging technique wasn't textbook, but she was still one of the best back-row players in the Pac-10. Cal has one of the better liberos in the Pac-10 in Jillian Davis. They lost two players at DS who played for 4 years. There's a new DS, and several of the incoming freshmen can play backrow. I recall that last season, it was usually Davis (and one serving specialist) in at L for both middles. Cal should be OK on serve-receive. BTW - does anyone know of any libero substitution scheme to allow one middle and one LS in the back row? One of the Cal middles (Powers) was very good in the back row, but went out for the L after serving. It seems that the way to get the libero in for 5 of the 6 rotations is to sub for players opposite each other.

This from Cal's website: "2004 OUTLOOK: The Bears will be without one of the premier players in the country, 6-4 senior outside hitter Mia Jerkov. Jerkov will be staying in her native Croatia to play with her national team. She competed for the Croatian National Team this past spring in hopes for a berth in the 2004 Olympic Games. As part of her training, Jerkov was sent by the Croatian Federation to play matches with a Russian club team comprised of national team players, which put her college eligibility for the 2004 season in jeopardy. A National Player of the Year candidate, she was a two-time All-America, All-Pacific Region and All-Pac-10 selection, had recorded 30 or more kills in a match 14 times and is the school-record holder for single-season kills (701) and points (785.5). Jerkov had been AVCA Division I National Player of the Week twice, Pac-10 Player of the Week six times and MVP in five-straight regular season tournaments, while leading the Pac-10 in kills the past two seasons." calbears.collegesports.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/083004aab.html
