You beat me to this foreignball. Croatia's OG hopes ended in June 2003 when they failed to qualify for the European Championships out of their group. From that point onwards, teams from Europe went to OG qualifiers either according to the result of the ECH (World Cup in 2004 and OG Qualifier in Baku) or according to world ranking (tournament in Japan) which they were not ranked high enough to be a candidate for at any point. Thus this information is not accurate and misleading. My take on what happened: Uralochka was struggling with injuries and had problems fielding a team for Champions League. Croatian National team has always had very close ties with Uralochka Coach Karpol and they were asked to provide him with a player (which has happened before both ways also). Since Mia was the one player they have of necessary caliber eligible (not bound by contract to another team and/or not having played european cup matches for another team), she was sent there. Once more, please note that this is what i think has happened....

I am not sure why Mia is not returning, but it could be a few reasons. 1. She is not allowed by Croatian Volleyball Federation-CVF- (I doubt this one) 2. THe NCAA found a violation in her playing for Uralotchka in Russia so they are not allowing her 3. She simply chose not to come back I seriously doubt it is the No. 1. I used to have a friend who played for Croatia who told me the CVF is a major pain in the a@@. One of the best players in the world, Barbara Jelic, refused to play for the national team because of a feud with them. Hence, she went to play in Turkey and Croatians did not qualify for Athens. If anything else, it would be an incentive for Mia to get the hell out of there and come to USA (if they did her wrong). I seriously doubt they have a power to make her stay. Threatening her she would not be on a national team? It is more of an obligation to be a part of it than an honor (unlike here in the US). I doubt the No. 2 also although you never know. I really think it is something along the lines of No. 3. But I could be VERY wrong. If you have a Croatian as a friend, ask them to translate this link for you www.gloria.com.hr/site/mainpages/detail3.php?godina=2004&mjesec=travanj&broj=484&link=jerkov484.htmMaybe some things will make more sense.

First of all, I was very much aware that Croatia wasn't in the running for an Olympic berth. I stated earlier that Mia was competing for her national team in some late Spring/early Summer tournament. Second, I think they're still waiting for the NCAA reinstatement subcommittee ruling on her eligibility. It's a moot point now, but I'd still like to know how it ends. Third, I think she can take a "pain in the ass". She played for Nikolai Karpov, didn't she? What influence would the CVF have over her playing professionally in Europe? Could that be an influence? Fourth - the guy who writes the Cal releases probably isn't privy to all the info. It doesn't get all the details right, but that wouldn't be unusual.

As far as I know when you sign to play for a team out of your country, you need to submit a playing licence from your federation. Thus, if Mia has aspirations to play pro outside Croatia, she'd need to be in good terms with the fed to get the necessary paperwork.

It took me awhile but here it comes: Title: Honey and caviar. Subtitle: Vball payer M Jerkov (21), daughter of the legendary BB star Zelko Jerkov accepted the invitation of famous RUS coach N Karpol and moved to Ekaterinburg. Her team Uralochka VBC finished 1st in RUS Nat championship. The first part is kind of a family story representing her dad – OG gold medallist from Moscow 1980, silver in Montreal 1976, World games champion 1978 in Manila, describing her mom’s fears of having her daughter so far away from home, etc. Her dad as a world class ex-athlete is observing how important good coaching is for a young player like his daughter and he thinks Karpol is one of the best, a man who rules with a steel arm and who would never put up with defeat ( ). Her mom shares she was afraid because if Mia had fallen in love here in the US she would have never returned to her family in Croatia. She also says RUS is much closer to CRO so she hopes Mia would come and see her if something like that happens while she’s there ( ;D). Here is something that I’m not a 100% sure because my Croatian is not perfect : I understand it as Karpol has a 16 yo grandson who he has been taken care of and who resides in Croatia (both parents – Karpol’s son and his step daughter was killed in an accident). The kid is now the best CRO tennis player in his age group. So NK promised to look after Mia as she was his own child. His invite was sent to the whole Jerkov’s family last summer and was fully approved by both her parents! Does anybody know whether NK has suffered such a loss? If somebody knows more about that, please, confirm. Description of Mia’s achievements follows and some thoughts of her: 2 EURO JO silver medals, 1st Team AA saying it’s the 1st time since 1981 when somebody who is not American has been honored (not quite true, right? ( ). She is describing her daily schedule while at CAL pointing out she had been so busy that she couldn’t see/socialize with people out of the vball team/staff. She also underlines that both Berkeley and Eakterinburg have been her decisions, saying she has been a fan of both places! 2nd Part: Diamonds and Arms Basically it provides info regarding Ekaterinburg (it was known as Sverdlovsk before 2000). Located in the foot of Ural Mountains with1.5 mil population it’s is named “Window to Asia”. It had been known as a capital of Russian gold and diamond industry for years before it became leading manufacturing center of military science/industry during communist party time. For that reason it used to be closed for foreigners. In 1979 more than 200 people were killed as a result of unsuccessful military experiment with anthrax. The officials said it happened because it was a cursed place. Some words about the climate – winter lasts 6 months, hottest summer days are in the range of 65-67*. M Jerkov is the first foreign player ever in Uralochka’s team list. The team's daily routine follows: wake up at 6 am; stretching at 6.30, ballet class (says NK believes it improves lateral movement) and after that practice until 11 am. Individual training during afternoons, nights are free. There is a comparison between her diets in the US and in RUS. It says she used to take a lot of vitamins while in the US, now she’s eating natural food - fish, honey and red caviar (see title). NK treats her very kindly (;D). He took her to RUS NT camp where she practiced with their NT. Finally some words of Mia: She says that even quite busy her schedule is mush easier over there compared to what it used to be at CAL, more time for STUDUING! and she can go to bed at 8 pm every night which was an impossible luxury in the US. ----------------------------------------------------------------- There is not any single word that implies a possible return to the States (my note). ----------------------------------------------------------------- IMO there is strong personal/family commitment in this case. Plus the fact some $$$ and bonuses could also be involved – she’s talking about studying there. Not that long ago it was a common practice for all Eastern Block countries to furnish their elite athletes with college diplomas. They still may have some facilitations left regarding that matter, who knows.

I have read of Karpol's loss and his grandson being a great tennis player elsewhere.
In Karpol's book he talks about the diet he has his players on. Fresh food is of major importance to Karpol. He monitors his athletes intake as closely as he can - he provides breakfast and lunch for all his athletes (even the young ones in the school - even though most live at home with their parents), and as often as possible he provides dinner.
I've seen Barbara Jelic play for Uralochka, and I know Vesna Jelic played in his second team for a year also...fwiw.

We all wish Mia the very best wherever she is playing. WE enjoyed having her!
Lots of factors involved. I have not heard how close she is to finishing her degree. She is a heavy duty academic and it would be nice to have the degree from Cal if she can. Hopefully if she lacks just a few units, she can complete the BA somewhere. If she can come to Cal in the spring or summer, probably she still has a scholarship/tuition paid. After that it will be gone I would think.
We'll see how Cal does this weekend in Texas, but TAMU and UCSB in Berkeley shortly..... along with a visit to Hawaii should show what they have to work with this year. Angie Pressey is as advertised from what she showed last nite. Starter and played very well.
Couple nagging temporary injuries on some other recruits. Talk around gym that Ellen Orchard is as advertised but she was not on floor last nite.
