I left in the middle of the 5th game, The beach was leading. THe Beach Sucks, They have no big hitters. I am use of seeing big hitters like Kim W. Janine Sandell from UCSB and Kelly Wing UCI, That one girl that played outside with the big tails she needs to learn how to swing outside... Northwestern had a big hitter outside, She was # 12.

Hmm...it doesn't look like the Beachless team will break out of its 2-year slump. The team have better pick up its game or risk being out of the NCAA tourney or losing in the 1st round for the THIRD consecutive year! We don't want that to happen when the Beachless is hosting the Final Four, do we, and the arena pretty empty like the Pyramid was last December?

I agree that the team did not look too good, except for the 5th game, but you guys calling Hetzer terrible is way out of line. She did not have a great or even good match but this kid is a redshirt freshman in her first college match. She put some nice balls away and in spurts showed well.

With its cupcake schedule, the team have better perform straight off the gate! Otherwise it will be humiliated again in December.

Lay off Hetzer because the girl is cute!! On a serious note, anyone know why Natalie Uhart and Rosie Lewis did'nt play and why Sarah Kroneberger did? Certainly not a great way to start the season but still a win. Thanks to Northeastern for helping us out in that 5th game.

Is LBSU running a 6-2, if not, how does the setter have 18 attacks, with 7 kills and 5 errors?

49ers Edge Northeastern in Season Opener LONG BEACH, CA – The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team opened its 2004 campaign with a 3-2 win over the Northeastern Huskies Wednesday night at The Pyramid. Game scores were 30-23, 26-30, 26-30, 34-32, 15-6. With the victory, LBSU became the fifth women’s volleyball team in NCAA history to reach 900 program wins. Long Beach State is 1-0 on the season, and 12-0 in season openers since 1992. Robin Miramontes paced The Beach with a career-high 20 kills, while adding four assists, and a career-high seven digs. Redshirt freshman Heather Hetzer poured in a career-best 17 kills in her 49er debut. True freshman Alexis Crimes turned in 13 kills and six blocks in her 49er debut as well. Setter Jillian Mazzarella notched 56 assists, seven kills, and a career-high 21 digs for her first double-double of the season. As a team, the 49ers connected for 93 digs for the match. It was the ninth most digs for a single match in school history. Heather Laudato recorded 20 digs as well. Whitney Turner recorded a match-high 25 kills in the losing effort for the Huskies. LBSU pulled away from the Huskies in the first set after the score was knotted at 12-12 with an 8-3 run to take a 20-15 advantage. Long Beach State had its biggest lead of the match at 25-17, after an NU attack error. The 49ers would put away Northeastern, 30-23, courtesy of a Hetzer kill. Both Hetzer and Crum paced The Beach in the frame with four kills each, while Mazzarella and Miramontes chipped in with three kills each. Despite registering a .191 attack percentage (17-8-47), the 49ers limited the Huskies to just a .096 clip (13-8-52), and out-dug NU, 24-19. Northeastern managed to square the match at 1-1 after a 30-26 game two victory. Turner kept her hot hitting in the set with six kills to raise her match total to 13. As a team, the Huskies mustered just 13 kills, but limited LBSU to just a .041 attack percentage (14-12-49). NU took a 21-18 lead in the frame, courtesy of a Peterson service ace. The 49ers responded with a 7-3 run to take a 25-24 lead. However, Northeastern ran off four straight points to take a 28-25 lead. The Huskies continued to surprise the 49ers, after a 30-26 game three victory. Turner continued her offensive assault for NU with six more kills in the frame. Long Beach State managed to tie the game on three different occasions at 16-16, 17-17, and 18-18, but could never take the lead. LBSU managed to pull within one point at 26-27, but Northeastern closed out The Beach with three straight points. Long Beach State rallied in the fourth game with a thrilling 34-32 victory. Miramontes poured in eight kills in the game, while teammate Hetzer notched six kills. As a team, the 49ers connected for 23 kills and 25 digs. LBSU fought off match point twice at 31-30 (NU attack error) and at 32-31 (Miramontes kill). The 49ers jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fifth and final frame, forcing Northeastern to call a timeout. Long Beach State then built its lead to 8-2 after the timeout, and closed out the Huskies, 15-6. LBSU takes on Liberty on Friday, Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in The Pyramid. www.longbeachstate.com/vol/wvol/REL04/rel090104.htmlBox Score: www.longbeachstate.com/vol/wvol/BOX04/LBWVB01.HTM

Certainly not a great way to start the season but still a win. Thanks to Northeastern for helping us out in that 5th game. I read somewhere that Rosie has a sore back or something like that. Don't know about Natalie. I was wondering the same thing. Does anyone know if something was going on with Erika? She wasn't swinging away so I'm thinking her shoulder hasn't healed yet?

Erica is not fully back and the way she held her arm, in the last half of the match, was really sad. I would like to know why Brian has not give her some time off and let another freshman play. It only took the other team a couple of plays to figure out she could only push the ball over the net, and without another proven outside, this team was in trouble from the beginning.
Crimes athletically looked great and should be an all-american in a couple of years. She needs to bring her skill level up but she is really fun to watch.
Being a Beach fan this match was really hard to watch. It is also hard to believe that only three years ago this program was undefeated and playing for the title. Brian has worked miracles in the past and I hope he can pull off one of his biggest. Liberty should be no problem but a pretty good Utah team comes in on Saturday night.
