TheSantaBarbarian here, safe in Southern California and away from big nasty hurricanes. (And it's now looking like I may have an apartment to go back to. ;D)
I'm not making any claims about the final four. It's a long season and there is a good likelyhood that at least part of the time we will be using a frosh setter. Like most of the rest of the teams, we just have to wait and see what happens when we take the court. We do get tested early though with away games at Berkley, Texas A&M, adn Florida (assuming we beat UConn.) By that point we will have a pretty good idea about where we stand.
However, watch Janine Sandell. You can make all the comments you want about whimpy Gaucho hitters, but she is the real deal. The one thing I really liked about her, as opposed to big hitters like Glass, is that (for the most part) she was very good at placing the ball. She did not try to swing full strength on every hit. In the NCAA loss last year to Northern Iowa, she had 27 kills and only 8 hitting errors. She also had 2 solo blocks and two block assists, which was tops for the match for either team. That is not bad for a 5' 10" OH frosh. Of course, last year was last year, and what counts is what she brings to teh court this year. And now the first Gaucho match of the season should just about over and I just have to sit and wait until someone posts the results. Sigh... (It is against Wichita St. in the San Diego St. tourney.)

I haven't heard a name yet in this thread that hits as well and hard as Willoughby could.
Keep trying.
UCSB will be lucky to get out on top of the Big West... I highly doubt Final Four.

Think so? Who do you expect to win Big West?

Well, it was UCSB over WSU in four -- 15-30, 25-30, 31-29, 26-30.

Are you back permanently then? No. I'm just here until the storm passes and I have power back there. It looks like it is already just north of Miami so I think my area may be spared the worst of it. There will probably be some significant flooding, but I'm on the second floor, so that should be a problem.

As far as Big West crown: Toss up between 4 capable schools this season: UCSB, LBSU, UCI, and Idaho.

I'm not sure droping some games (not matches) early on is all bad, it temds to instill a sense of humility. Do you happen to know if and where there are game stats? Thanks again. Note: Wichita St. was 60 in the Balcorra last year, so at least they are not a marshmellow team.

I went back to get the link for you, and they've already dropped the stats and moved to the next game. The WSU link, at goshockers.com should have it up shortly, but they're not there yet. I don't know too much about UCSB, but from what I could tell about WSU, they were hitting very poorly. You are right -- this year WSU is definitely not a marshmallow team. Good luck in the rest of the tournament.

I saw UCSB in the NCAA's last year in Mpls. I hope they return again this year for the regionals. The UCSB/Northern Iowa match was great to watch and Sandell could really pound it.

Several weeks ago (on the day the Big West coaches poll first came out) I talked to the guy that updates the artilces on the UCSB website. He said he was going to be in Australia right about now. Don't know if he brought his laptop and phone with him, but I wouldn't hold my breath for updates on the UCSB atheltics web site if I were you. Looks like SDSU will have live stats for tonight's match though. Check out the link on the UCSB schedule: ucsbgauchos.collegesports.com/sports/w-volley/sched/ucsb-w-volley-sched.html
