OH: Buchler OH: Mosser M: Ryan M: ? S: Miller OPP: May L: Sponcil Sponcil could aslo set a 6-2 and pass rotations when she's up front. 6-2 seems very hard without TVW Gates will definitely be one of the middles. Also Kyra Rogers, but small 6'0'' for MB and Sabrina Smith 6'4'' Freshman

Was excited to see the UCLA 2017 thread at the TOP of the forum. Was hoping it was the announcement of new commitment but it was the loss of a TOP player and now my entire day was ruined

She will leave UCLA with a perfect record against Stanford 😝. Not too many Bruins can say that

WTF like literally Wtf Van Winden would have been the bruins top hitter and with Sponcil the top pair on the beach?? What is going on. Cal Poly should now win the big west, hawaii fans should be scared. Did she get a release?

More time for freshmen to play. It's a loss for sure, but a lot of people are overlooking Alexis Light in this recruiting class. She has been a late bloomer who has much upside as anyone on the roster (6'5" OH's aren't common). With Buechler, May, Mosser, Light, Sponcil, no UCLA fan should be overly bummed. The cupboard is still pretty full, and full with young talent. The key will be setting, as Miller didn't take over like many hoped, and if there is a 6-2 then Sealy will need to train Muno to set again, or Sponcil. My guess is Muno or Sponcil will set, with the other playing libero.
Oh and Sponcil and Muno were beach partners for a lot of high school as well, guessing they will make a great #1 next year.

The freshmen are good, but Buechler is now the only piece of the offense that is returning. That's just a lot of new pieces to fit together.

Muno and Sponcil both need to be behind a block, although as a pair they would be good enough to win a lot of matches at the collegiate level. At any rate, the McNamara's will be UCLA's #1 pair next season. Actually, Van Winden was surprisingly mediocre - by her standards - for UCLA beach in 2017. I think some of that had to do with Sealy only letting his indoor players practice with the beach team twice a week. The rest of the time they're in the gym. Makes it difficult for players as talented as Van Winden or Muno to reach their potential during the beach season, and I have to wonder if that factored in at all with Van Winden's decision to leave.

Seems like he doesn't appreciate the sport that much, but maybe I'm over reading the situation.

I'm not suggesting UCLA will compete for a Title this year. More that these players will get a ton of experience now, and UCLA could/should be a top 5 team in a couple years as a result.

He never played AVP, although I'd imagine a volleyball playing Santa Monica kid has had some level of exposure to beach. I don't know Sealy very well at all, so I really don't have any insight on his feelings about UCLA's beach program.

Yep, you're right. He played with Doug Partie, Erik Sullivan, and I forget who else.

Not that this necessarily means anything, but UCLA updated its roster and listed Sponcil as an OH. Zana Muno is listed just as a setter, whereas last year she was listed as OH/OPP.
