I don't see the USA women competing with Brazil & Germany consistently at least for the next couple of years. The good news is they say that it takes a young player coming out of college two or 3 years to get their footing on the pro tour....That sets Sara & Kelly up well for Toyko 2020 (If they stay together- I still have my doubts they will). Early 2020 Gold Medal Favorite in my opinion....Laura & Kira to repeat! Silver goes to Duda & Agatha....Another Bronze for......Kerri & Nicole (Yes..you heard it hear first)...Well....I can dream!!!
This 2-3 year stuff to get footing, that you hear coming from a lot of places, simply isn't true. Historically it takes a very short time for elite athletes to adjust to the pro game and become successful in terms of making and winning finals. It may be longer now due to points etc. but a lot of it is the unnecessary addition of all these processes to beach volleyball. (like four years of college, when Sara/Kelly should have been full time pros years ago)
For good but not great players like Fonoimoana, Summer, Gibb types it can take longer but for era-elite players its a very fast process. The following players were winning or making finals very quickly after their post-college pro debuts:
Kerri
Misty
Reinder
Rego
Duda
Annett Davis
Loiola
Sinjin/Stoklos/Hov/Dodd/Karch
Steffes
Whitmarsh
Lambert
Phil
And now the transition is easier than ever because the game is much more similar to indoor than in years past. It also seems to take longer for US players, and I think thats largely mental. The US players seem wedded to the idea it takes a ton of time (witness Sara not picking up April or Kerri) but the facts say otherwise
