Round 3 begins tomorrow. All teams currently alive were their respective national league champions. Based on national rankings the champions of the highest ranked nations receive a bye into round four. Russia, Italy, Turkey, Poland, etc. But Vakifbank who did not win the Turkish championship has to play up through the early brackets. So in this 3rd round both Imoco and Vakif will be playing the equivalent of AAA teams playing the majors. A great opportunity for the lower ranked teams to play at home against some of the best. Spirited play but expect no upsets. And of course a powerful ECZ did not even qualify for this years CL as they placed 4th last year in the Turkish league. Certainly one of the all time fails for what was to be a dream season for ECZ on their 100th year anniversary.
Round 4 is when the real action begins.

"All time fails" may be a bit of an exaggeration... They did win the Club World Championships to begin the season, beat Fenerbache in the CL and then lost to Vakif after that gruesome injury to Thaisa. In Turkish League, the big reason they got 3rd in the championship was because Vakifbank lost to the 4 seed in the semis (I believe it was Galtasaray?), which put Ecz vs. Vakif in the semis. I don't know if anyone considered Ecz the dream team in Turkish League play, considering they can only play 3 internationals, and Vakif has the best Turkish setter, OH (Gozde), whereas Ecz didn't have as strong of Turkish players IMO.

Vakifbank advances to round 4 but Krob does not start, Gozde starts. Last year Hill started throughout the CL playoffs. Krob is used once as a defensive sub for sloetjes and then in the 3rd set when the second string is played she starts. She is still doing a lot of tipping on her attacks and got aced once. A very average performance from her today.

Bricio looks really good/comfortable out there. Sure, they were playing a very weak team. She looks stronger. Hitting the ball as hard or harder than I have ever seen her. Also, she was hitting a very quick set (even behind the 3 meter line).... and it sure looked natural for her.

Round of 16 pool play starts this week. Today Novara vs Imoco. With the unbalanced pool assignments this year every ranking parameter is important. See link for details; www.cev.lu/Competition-Area/CompetitionStandings.aspx?ID=1036. Pool B has 3 of the top teams and by chance only one may advance depending on the won/loss record. First from the four pools and the next two top records for a total of 6. Fenerbache, Novara, and Imoco are all in the same pool. All games are view-able live or archived form laola1.tv. Linnk to today's match; www.laola1.tv/en-int/livestream/2017-12-13-imoco-volley-conegliano-igor-gorgonzola-novara-lenThere are no foreign player limits in CL so Imoco will probably start with Hill/Brico, Robin/Danesi, and Fabris. These two teams just met last week and Imoco won a five setter with Hill having her best game of the season and Bricio coming out flat. Three losses in this pool means you probably have no chance to advance unless you are going to host the tournament finals. Once again reputations will be built or tarnished in this years very competitive pool B which may have better competition then the final 6.

Imoco Conegliano 25-13 in the first set. This is the first shot fired across the bow of Vakifbank that repeating will be more difficult than imagined. The full attacking power was on display with Fabris for the first time being able to start. To soon to tell but a Imoco vs Vakif final would be a must see event especially with Hill and Robin both former Vakif players competing against their old friends.
