swatchmajorseries.com/en/1794/sayonara-saxton-schalk?linkId=44581270I saw it coming when I saw Saxton with O’Gorman for the Sydney 2* event in two weeks. So since Chaim Schalk is married to Lane Carico, he has decided to switch to the American federation— partner to be announced. This way he can probably have the same partner for world tour and AVP tour. The two have played for 4 years and went to the 2016 Olympics. But 2017 was just too inconsistent for them, despite a 5th at World Champs.

Big news. But what US blockers are left for him?

Where would he rank as a US defender? Anywhere from 4-7 in the muddled mid area I would think.

Hear his story on the podcast here: www.facebook.com/volleyballsource/videos/10156094544923836/He just got a finger surgery a few weeks ago, but grinding at the gym. Seems like the biggest reason why he switched was the lack of funds and financial support the Canadian atheletes received. He still sees himself relatively young and would like to play till he’s 40 (he is 31 now). But isn’t there even more competition in the US? Saw the Tri Bourne invited him to speak on the Sandcast on instagram.

But this means he won’t be able to play on the FIVB tour for two years due to FIVB quarantine rules, which gives him very limited chances of making it to Tokyo. Since he already has been able to play AVP due to his dual citizenship I can’t really see what he gains from the switch?
Not being able to play FIVB must also limit his chances of picking up a top US player for a long-time partnership.

I only know per the FIVB regulations, any player can only change federations once. They cannot go back and they cannot change to a third one.

Really like him if only for his size as a defender, has sneaky athleticism too. Trains in Huntington & Hermosa so no real surprise he's taking this approach. Had decent success with Lorenz tho that team's ceiling has already been reached.

He's represented Canada in international play, so he has to sit out two years before being eligible for international play (e.g. the world tour and Olympics) as a U.S. player.

Wow that’s really risky. Two years from now is already the summer of 2019. Is he still aiming for Tokyo 2020?? And even then, he has a greater competition in the US than Canada of course.

Hate the constant focus on the Olympics but just from that perspective, if Chaim is looking to win, rather than qualify, this is his best choice. Saxton just isn't good enough to really contend for gold, but in the US there are guys that are better and fit Chaim better.

Probably no one initially but in a couple years when he is eligible, and Nick is 40 and siding out even worse than he does now? Maybe Phil will decide he wants a partner that can put the ball away? Doubtful but definitely within the realm. If Chaim wasn't cup tied now, I would consider him as good as any US defender, different, but as good. I don't think he is a huge step up from someone like Nick, but I think they are on the same level

Perfect time to have a kid and only play domestic. Got to sit 2 years anyway. I'd put him 2nd or 3rd as a defender in the US, right with Taylor.

I would put him in the top 3 far as USA defenders for sure. His defense isn’t great but he sides out really good. He’s kinda like a Hyden. Digs some balls but sides out well. When phil plays him phil struggles blocking him! Last few times they didn’t serve him they served Saxton
