First, grades for the 2017 season:
Setter: A- (hey, Iosia isn't Robyn Ah Mow ( or Lindsey Berg))
Outside Hitters: B- (team's weakness)
Middles: A (Emily, Emily, and later on, a dollop of Natasha)
Defensive Specialists: B+ (Guinasso and Ross were very good servers; Kahakai, Granato, and Ross good floor defenders)
Passing: B- (some problems early in the season)
Serving: B+ (Iosia, Guinasso, Ma'afala, Ross, Kahakai on the plus; Granato, Castillo on the minus)
Coaching: A (some awkward period of adjustment but they settled down with some great decisions that Shoji himself would never have made)
Second, some questions for the off-season:
1. Will Robyn Ah Mow-Santos' inaugural coaching staff undergo any changes? Specifically, will Ljungqvist return or is she a one-and-done assistant like Lindsey Berg? Does Ljungqvist have long term aspirations at Hawaii?
2. Will any of the 2017 seniors return in the 2018 season as a grad or volunteer coach?
3. Who will be the star of the 2018 team? Before you say "McKenna Granato," let me provide an alternative: Sophia Howling.
4. With an abundance of available scholarships, how likely is it that Hawaii will land an impact transfer? I mean, you gotta believe there are a lot of unhappy players out there in the B1G and PAC-12.
5. Will Hawaii land a foreign recruit, like an Angelica Ljungqvist or Yuval Katz (well, a female version of him)?
6. Will Casey Castillo be able to keep her job as an outside hitter? If so, will she have a break-out season including All-Conference honors?
7. Will any player transfer OUT?
8. What will be Kirsten Sibley's role? Relegated to the bench or full-time starter? Has she plateaued or regressed?
9. Janelle Gong, Rika Okino, or McKenna Ross at libero? Or someone no one expects? Or someone who isn't on the current 2017 team?
10. Why did Shaney Lipscomb leave? Will she return or is her decision irreversible?
11. Will Arden Misraje ever rejoin the team?
12. Will anyone from the beach team join the indoor team? (You gotta think RAMS and Jeff Hall have had conversations.)
13. Faith Ma'afala or Norene Iosia at setter? Or just continue experimenting with the 6-2?
14. Incoming recruit Trinity Castaneda -- umm, who dis gurl?
15. Chris MacLachlin is supposedly the team's motivational/psych consultant? Is it working? Or can we blame him for all the 5-set losses? Time for a new consultant perhaps?
16. There was some talk of Natasha Burns transferring. Will she return?
17. Will Skyler Williams return to her opening weekend form?
Bonus non-Hawaii questions:
18. When did Chris Tamas start losing his hair? Speaking of hair, can Tamas's wife, Jennifer Joines, get any blonder?
19. Will the Corbellis ever return to Hawaii to do some consulting for the Wahine?
20. With all the uncertainty surrounding the Cal volleyball program, especially with Matt McShane on indefinite leave of absence, what will become of all those Hawaii connections: Jennifer (Carey) Dorr, Cayley Thurlby, Spencer MacLachlin?

1. My instinct is that Angelica is a one and done coach without long term Hawaii aspirations, but I also think she may have signed on for a two- year commitment. Angelica is one that would be nice to keep around however.
2. I don't think so. Maybe Savannah would as she seems to have "coaching in her". Maglio will be back concentrating solely on Beach volleyball (and her studies), so she's a possibility but I doubt it. Kalei plans to stay in Hawaii but I think she's done with volleyball and will concentrate on rehabilitation...everyone else is moving on.
3. McKenna Granato will still be the star. I do not see Howling overtaking her.
4. It's a possibility of a transfer but I don't believe it will a TVW type player.
5. No, not next year.
6. Casey will stay as an outside hitter and be on the Big West All-conference.
7. Sibley will transfer out if she can find a team that will take her as a junior. Unfortunately for her, she wasted her sophomore year and she knows it.
8. See #7. Sibley has not regressed or plateaued...she wasn't given a chance this year. She had potential as a freshman.
9. Gong or someone not on the team. This is where an impact transfer may come in. Do not believe Ross will be Libero but you never know!
10. Shaney wanted to stay and play, it was not really her decision as some might believe.. Her decision is irreversible.
11. Possibly. I don't think so for next year. It depends on how well her knee heals and what kind of playing time she can reasonably expect.
12. Aside from Arden, doubtful.
13. They will continue experimenting with the 6-2.
14. We'll see if she heals up.
15. I don't think they used Chris enough.
16. Natasha will return. She may opt to graduate and be a "senior" next year. If she hadn't have gotten playing time, she would have been gone despite how much she loves Hawaii.
17. Yes. She did get a little lucky on some of her opening weekend blocks. She will block more consistently next year, but look to some inconsistencies in her overall play until her junior year. She will make huge strides overall.

What ever happened to Janelle Gong? She was asked to redshirt this season.

I am a fan of Gong she shows good potential and if she comes back I wouldn't be surprised if she is the starting libero or first ds off the bench.
I also see Sibley transferring out , I think many teams will take her as a junior. I could see her starting for the USF Dons for instance. Just don't think she will want to stay and be third string her final two years.
I actually see Ljungqvist staying around as long as Ah Mow Santos is around.

if the Wahine land a solid middle transfer I really hope RAMS redshirts Howling or Williams, especially if Burns plans on playing for only one more season.

i will try to answer these questions based on my opinions. these are just my opinions and if you get upset or dont like it, dont be so sensitive
1) her staff should change, those 2 guys aren't as good as other top programs. a head coach is good because of their assistants. those two guys dont have the experience or knowledge (yet) to be great assistants. she needs to bring in a top coach so they all can learn more. i dont think angelica will stick around, she is just a good friend of robyn and helped her out. robyn is too emotional during games, dave was more tactical
2) i dont see any of the seniors returning to coach. they all will be graduated and moving on.
3) neither will be "the star". they will have no stars next season. you dont need stars to win. the problem with hawaii was they thought they could just come in and beat every team because of their past. you cant just show up and win a match. when you dont have a "star" you have to try and do what you can to win. if or when they realize this, they will be able to win those 5 set matches. 5 set matches are won and loss cause of coaching.
4) hawaii will get 0 big time transfers. i dont know why a big time player would go to a school that is a step down.
5) i dont know why people are so big on international players. they will not get any coming in.
6) castillo will not make all conference. these players are backups who had to start by default. think about it, you had a setter starting as a hitter, a walk on ds playing on the outside, and the starting setter doing some hitting. that should tell you, the players they had were not that good. with that being said, they could all improve, but this is their 3rd year in the program and i dont see it happening. they will be ok in conference play, but against top schools they wont make an impact.
7) transferring is tough, especially as an upperclassman. some need to transfer
8) sibley is not good enough to be an effective player
9) neither will start the season as the libero
10) she probably didn't like the program
11) i doubt it
12) nope
13) iosia is the setter, she needs to get in better shape and have a better attitude
14) not any good
15) he's just been around for so long, i dont think he helps them at all
16) she should
17) nope
in summary, as i said before, hawaii is not as talented as in the past. not to knock robyn, but she's obviously not shoji. he was there 42 years and knew how to coach and make adjustments. i believe if shoji was still there, those 5 setters would have been different and they would have beaten cal poly both times. i know the girls mentioned that both coaches are so different, obviously dave was a lot more calmer and didn't get so intense. not to say what style is better, but i think robyn knew the team wasn't that talented as she has seen so she knew they had to work harder and never give up. on the flip side, i think dave was confident in his coaching during matches. they have players that are ok for conference play but i would think the goal is to win a national championship. other teams are starting to catch the wahine in conference. most of the girls probably wouldn't play much at bigger schools which is why they chose hawaii. look at emma smith, she rarely plays at a bottom pac 12 school but played often last year at hawaii.
as much as i would like to see hawaii back on top, i dont see it happening next season. they are starting to decline and i hope the coaching staff can do their job and bring the success that hawaii fans remember.

8. See #7. Sibley has not regressed or plateaued...she wasn't given a chance this year. She had potential as a freshman. Maybe she wasn't "given a chance" because she wasn't producing at practice...or the times that she was given a chance she didn't produce like Robyn wanted...if she had the potential to make a difference in situations where the Wahine were struggling I'm sure Robyn would have used her For instance from watching Sibley play previously do you thing she would have made a bigger difference than what McKenna Ross did last night? I don't think so

Kendra Koelsch was a hitter before she came to Hawai'i. She didn't come to Hawai'i as a setter Dave converted her Kendra was a setter/hitter when she came. In high school she set but hit in club because she was behind Kelsey Humphreys. In the Ann Kang Invitational she was setting a 5-1.
