Assuming Williams recovers fully from whatever ails her leg, she's got a middle spot sewn up, IMO. Same for Molly if her recovery continues as expected. Which leaves... -Hart and Rettke to fight for the other middle spot; -Hart, Rettke, and Duello to fight for the RS spot; -Loberg, Duello, and Whalen to fight for the other OH spot. Should be some healthy competition in the spring and summer. I don't see Rettke having to fight for a spot on the court next year. She was probably the best freshman in the nation. True. It's really "will she be a middle or a RS"? She's going to need to work on her digging if she's gonna play RS. Same with Hart, for that matter.

Maybe shhhhhhh's dream of a three middle attack becomes true now that there may not be such a dropoff between two and three?

Good morning, Badger fans! Good morning. I am in a good mood, generally, but I will leave this board if the jerks keep appearing. Proud of these kids. Fought hard. Look forward to a bright future. I hope that the sunny legacy of Gillis gets passed down to others. I think it's Dodd for next year and Whitehead the year after. Disappointed we didn't see Loberg earlier and what that might have meant. Whoever said she would replace Gillis by the end of the season was spot on. But her play has me super pumped for next year, especially if Haggerty is nearly full strength!

Definitely have some mixed feelings about this season as a whole, but the future is bright for the Badgers in 2018 and beyond. I'd guess that the projected lineup will be:
S-Hilley, she should be an AA candidate next year. I thought she made steady improvements throughout the year and she set a heck of a match against Stanford. Love how aggressive she is at setting the middle.
OH-Haggerty, Badgers need her at 100% if they want to make a title push. Terminal outside hitter who can (and will) play 6 rotations.
OH-Loberg, what a great showing for her in the NCAA tournament. Sheffield is either somewhat of a genius for keeping her a secret weapon until the tournament, or it was a really poor choice in hindsight to not play her earlier. At any rate, great tournament for her and she should be the L2.
RS-Duello, up and down year for Madison. Had glimpses of showing improvement but she ultimately didn't show consistent play or ability to terminate against quality opponents. She does do a nice job blocking on the right, but the Badgers will need a lot more from her next year, or she risks being out of the rotation. I hope she uses the missed serve that lost the match to Stanford as motivation to work her but off and make big strides.
MB-Rettke, what more can you say about her. She will be on a short list for NPOY next year if she has similar numbers and Wisconsin becomes a top 5-10 team. Didn't have her best match tonight against Stanford, but tonight was a preview of what she'll be facing next year with consistent double and triple blocks. The pin hitters will owe her a big thank you for giving them so many 1 on 1 opportunities, but Dana will need to find ways to terminate against big blocks.
MB-Williams, she looked smoother offensively this year but didn't have the same lateral speed closing the bock compared to the previous two years. I hope she comes with extra motivation to improve and establish herself as one of the top middles in the country next year. She's always oozed potential and she has had a very nice career so far, but I think she can be more dominant than she is.
L-Clark, for the most part I thought she did a very good job this year. Great quickness, solid passer and she can dig the heck out of the ball.
DS-Dodge (for Loberg), another player who I thought made some good strides this year. Her quickness definitely improved and overall she's just a very solid volleyball player.
DS-Dodd or MacDonald for Duello, curious to see who gets the nod here. I've always though MacDonald was underrated as a defender.
IMO, right there you have a top 5-6 team coming back along with Texas, Stanford, Minnesota and a couple of others. Haggerty and Loberg give you the terminal outside hitters that were missing from most of this season, you have 2 dynamic middles, a really good setter and a strong libero.
With that being said, I would absolutely love to see them shift Rettke to RS and put Hart in the middle. With Rettke on the RS, you'll still be able to run slides for her and front quicks if Hart or Williams runs a slide, but most significant is that on a bad pass you can outlet to Rettke and give her more opportunities to swing. Also, if she aspires to play with Team USA, I don't see her making it as a middle where lateral quickness is immensely important. Make the switch now so she can start developing as a RS and she will also score more points for the Badgers. For that to happen, Hart has to be as good as advertised and Rettke would need to be as effective on the right...two variables we wont know for a while. Lots of options and combinations available for the Badgers next year. Looking forward to seeing how 2018 goes.

Here’s a thought for you Badger fans: Rettke as an OH. She was an OH her last 2 years in club. Haggerty & Rettke make a lethal 1-2 punch on the outside. All depends on whether or not she can serve receive at the Big Ten level.
