Schedule is up overall still better than most years, but given all the new faces on the floor next year, it's an interesting schedule. I definitely think all of these matches are *winnable* for Washington, with the match @ Pitt probably being the toughest, IMO. San Diego could pay off down the road if the huskies could notch two wins, but I'm skeptical about how good of an RPI team SD will really be this year. They have a lot of Pac-12 teams on their schedule (UW twice, USC, UCLA, and OSU) and incestuous play doesn't help western teams in the RPI. We shall see what other teams SD plans on playing before getting too excited over that matchup in regards to UW's RPI. The Big 10 teams will be a challenge and Iowa is a decent gamble to do better in the Big 10 with Maryland's talent exodus, Ohio State, the Michigans, and Purdue working in a lot of new faces. That last week is certainly a win stuffer, IMO, as none of those teams are, IMO, "good" RPI teams. And they all suffered some big graduation losses and are unlikely to improve over last year. The name of the game for the huskies is just to make the tournament. They will be able to breathe a lot easier if the rest of the Pac-12 rolls up a stellar non-conference record. Thankfully the huskies avoid Oregon State twice, who will likely be the worst team in the conference, but it would have been nice for them to have them the last week of the season to lessen the inevitable RPI blow to the selection committee. gohuskies.com/schedule.aspx?path=wvball

Yeah, the name of the game for UW will be development over the season. They've got talent, just not a lot of experience. Hopefully, no one will show up at the first match wearing a boot.
An interesting decision will be where to play Drechsel: OPP or OH? If OPP, Julye would likely be the second OH. If OH (with Calle subbing backrow as a DS?), that would allow starting Cole at OPP.

Youre right, please no starts to 5 years of dehoog type injuries.

I'd like to see
OH- Bajema OH- Dreschel MB- Sanders MB- Niece S- Powell L- McPherson OPP- Maria B / d.s. Calle or Onosko
force our OH's to play all around, make them get better. I don't think any of the frosh hitters are Pac ready right now....

I'd like to see Bogomolova get some playing time. Since she hasn't played at all, whether she's up to starting is just guesswork. Cole is the most athletic of the new recruits. Julye and McPherson had great beach seasons. Hopefully that will translate to indoor. My guess: OH Bajema (Bogomolova) OH Julye (Crenshaw/Hoffman) MB Sanders (Grote) MB Niece OPP Drechsel (Cole) S Powell (Robinson) L/DS McPherson (Calle/Onosko)

From day one frosh contributors are Crenshaw, Powell and Cole who will all definitely get some playing time. Not the early fluff opponents of past seasons though, ie, SD, SD, Iowa, Illinois, Dayton and Pitt out the chute - ouch!.

Welcome to campus! To think they were rooting against Mansfield 6 months ago. I wonder if anybody has taught them the 4 finger W.

Cook isn't an idiot, so I have a hard time believing that he would keep pin hitters off the floor because of their blocking. That's just ludicrous. If they can score in the Pac-12, they play.

Can be hard to drive by and shoot at the same time. Bajema is the clear starter at one OH spot. I think the frontrunner for the other OH spot is Julye, who is a senior, has a whip-quick arm, and is coming off a very strong beach season. Knocks on her in the past have been blocking and passing. According to shhhh's argument, she should be starting - I'm just saying she's the frontrunner. I'm not saying that someone else can't win the spot: Drechsel, Crenshaw, or Hoffman. All will likely get playing time there.

She may get more rotations early on than others but it won't last.

Julye won't be competing with Schwan, Scambray, and Bajema for a starting role, but a couple frosh and, maybe, a soph. That said, she'll need to pass, at least for three rotations. She did have an even better beach season than the year before - hopefully, if given the chance to pass, she will. Her blocking will never be a strong-point. We'll see, in other words...
